The connections PTECH students make with our business partners are what set us apart from the rest. At our annual Summer Bridge program, incoming students participate in a Business Partner Meet & Greet. This is the first of many meetings with local professionals who will offer guidance, encouragement and career advice along their PTECH journey.

We are excited to welcome Molly White as the new HFM PTECH Assistant Principal. Mrs. White is excited to work with a program that helps students become college and career ready while contributing to their community.

“As someone who grew up in the area, I am so excited to be serving the communities that raised me and to foster connections with local businesses,” said White. “Building relationships and helping students reach their highest potential was important to me as a teacher, and I am eager to carry that with me into leadership.”

🌟PTECH INTERNSHIP SPOTLIGHT: Meet Chris Gamble

After his recent internship at Timeline Diesel, Chris Gamble is more confident than ever that he is on the right path.

“It’s really been a great experience and only enhanced my interest in the field,” said Chris.

Chris is in the Agricultural Power Machinery pathway and in the future plans to work for a company that handles everything from large tractors to semi trucks. At his internships he spent his time tearing down diesel pumps, rebuilding injectors, and learning about the many different tools involved in the process. This experience leaves him more prepared than ever for the next steps.

“These are critical components of engines I plan to spend my future working on,” said Chris. “I never knew how complex diesel pumps and injectors are, the amount of parts inside them is amazing.”

Owner of Timeline Diesel Jerry Redmond has partnered with the PTECH program for over a year now and says the entire experience has been a positive one and something he is happy to be a part of.

“PTECH students always have an open mind, they listen and have a great outlook,” said Redmond. “Chris came into this internship excited to work with a ready-to-go attitude, he’s an extremely capable set of hands.”

Chris feels fortunate to have this opportunity and says his internship experience would have been a very different one without his time at PTECH.

“Working collaboratively with other people has really helped my communication skills,” said Chris. “I felt confident talking with Jerry, asking the right questions and getting to know him, it came very naturally to me.”

🌟PTECH INTERNSHIP SPOTLIGHT: Meet Luis Soto

Luis Soto likes finding solutions to problems. And that’s exactly what he did at his recent internship at the Amsterdam Mohawks.

“Luis is very independent. Give him a task and he’ll take it upon himself to figure it out,” said Amsterdam Mohawks General Manager Megan Myers. “As a supervisor you couldn’t ask for anything better.”

Luis is in the Business Marketing & Management pathway and one thing that draws him to the marketing field is the analytics. Looking at the numbers, facts and figures and finding the best solution is where he thrives. But at his internship at the Mohawks, Luis was asked to step outside his comfort zone and spend his time communicating with college coaches, organizing events details and working with staff to develop materials. Luckily for Luis, PTECH has given him the skills to communicate confidently and professionally.

“I didn’t expect to have the job of contacting college coaches,” said Luis. “I was nervous at first but then I realized what I’m capable of and that I could handle it.”

One thing that took him by surprise was the amount of planning and preparation that goes into successfully organizing a season.

“It’s so much more than just setting up a game schedule, it takes a ton of time and planning,” said Luis. “I was really glad to be able to help here and see how it’s done. It was an amazing opportunity.”

While the Mohawks have hosted interns in the past, this was the first time having a student from the PTECH program.

“I wish I had had this opportunity in high school,” said Myers. “I love that these kids get to check out what they’re interested in before they head on to the next step.”

🌟PTECH INTERNSHIP SPOTLIGHT: Meet Kylie Ferrell

HFM PTECH junior Kylie Farrell recently completed an internship in Nathan Littauer Hospital & Nursing Home's Birthing Center and the experience opened her eyes to what she wants for her future.

Enrolled in the Health Studies pathway, Kylie always felt she had an interest in being an obstetrician, but it was her internship at Nathan Littauer that changed her mind on the path forward.

“Being here and seeing patient care first-hand has made me realize what I really want to do within the maternity field, I think I’d like to become a midwife," said Kylie. "I like that it’s more hands-on and I’d get to work closely with the patients.”

During her internship, Kylie was able to observe multiple procedures including a twin c-section, assisted nurses with patient care, and helped with the discharge process. The experience strengthened her passion for helping people and working directly with patients. She felt real value in seeing the day-to-day operations of a maternity unit and liked the hospital setting, an opportunity that would not have happened without PTECH.

“Someone my age would normally never get to see behind the scenes like this,” said Kylie. “It’s been a really cool experience and I am grateful to be able to map out my future based on this.”

Wendy Bowie, Registered Nurse in The Birthing Center, was extremely impressed with Kylie’s maturity level and professionalism. She hopes for more opportunities to host interns in the future.

“I love this relationship between the hospital and HFM BOCES,” said Bowie. “It’s incredibly important that we help grow the next generation of medical professionals to work right here in our hospital. Rural healthcare needs this.”

Portfolio Review Day! Always an exciting time. This is the day PTECH 10th graders stand in front of teachers and business partners and earn their spot at the college level. They talk about their experiences in the program, favorite projects and memories, how they've grown over the past two years, and why they deserve to move on to the next step. It can be a stressful day, but from the smiles we see, they all did an amazing job.

Thank you to Lexington, Chapter of The Arc New York, Mountain Valley Hospice & Palliative Care, Hilltop Acres Farm and Keymark for giving our students the feedback they need. We know good things are coming on this next leg of their PTECH journey.

Spring internships are underway! By working directly with local businesses and organizations, PTECH students gain valuable insight into day-to-day business operations, make connections with community members, and develop a better understanding of their path moving forward.

PTECH students Olivia Dumas, River Mussey, Damian Olsen, Brandon Otto and Hudson Rajter recently spent their day working with Foothills Worship Center and Catholic Charities of Fulton and Montgomery Counties at their Mass Food Giveaway. Organized through Regional Food Bank of Northeastern New York, these events provide large scale distributions of food directly to people in need. By participating at this event, students are not only helping their neighbors, they gain experience in community service, teamwork, and food distribution operations.

A day of discovery. Tenth graders spent the day at SUNY Fulton-Montgomery Community College where they presented on their Human Rights Projects and worked on their portfolios. Next year they will embark on the next leg of their PTECH journey and make the transition to the college, an exciting time for everyone! Current 11th grade mentors took them on guided tours of the campus and talked about their own PTECH experience at the college level.
