After months of quiet hallways, the Johnstown school family came together for their Opening Day on September 2 to welcome new staff, celebrate milestones, and look ahead to an exciting year.

Superintendent Alicia D. Koster introduced the District’s “Portraits in Practice” Strategic Implementation Plan, a multi-year roadmap focused on student agency, belonging, real-world readiness, equity, and access.

The District is expanding opportunities and support this year through a new Family Resource Center, District-wide school-based telehealth, a JHS Learning Center, Conscious Discipline at Pleasant Ave. and Warren St., expanded college and career programs, Early CTE Pathways, Driver Education, and new athletics and extracurriculars including girls varsity wrestling, competitive cheer, esports, and Unified Sports.

New staff members were introduced and five longtime educators were celebrated for an incredible 25 years of service each, representing 125 years of combined dedication to Johnstown students and families. Congratulations to Cory Cotter, Scott Hale, Quinn Swartwout, Nicole Davis, and Meredith Fagan.

As Board President Jennifer Sponnoble shared, the District is ready for the year ahead, and grateful to everyone whose hard work made Opening Day possible.

Looking forward to welcoming students in grades 1-12 for their first day of school on Tuesday, September 8; kindergarten students on Wednesday, September 9; and pre-K students on Friday, September 11. Here’s to a great school year!

🎉 It’s a day we look forward to every year … New Teacher Orientation!

We are so excited to welcome our new educators to the GJSD team! They spent the day getting to know Johnstown, hearing from Superintendent Koster, meeting our administrative team and Johnstown Teachers’ Association representatives, and learning more about our district, it's mission and its vision.

They enjoyed a fabulous lunch prepared by the GJSD Food Services Department, took a bus tour of Johnstown, and, of course, made a sweet stop for ice cream at Summer's Best Ice Cream!

We look forward to getting to know each of you and can’t wait to see all the new ideas, enthusiasm, and energy you bring to Johnstown. Welcome to GJSD - we’re so glad you’re here!

🌱 AgriQuest is growing at the Greater Johnstown School District! Now in its third year, the Farm-to-School initiative connects students in pre-K through 12th grade with agriculture in a cross-curricular way, helping them explore its connections to nutrition, science, math, business, cooking, food sustainability and more. Through hands-on learning and community partnerships, students are discovering where their food comes from, gaining a deeper understanding of local agriculture and exploring potential career paths.

This year, GJSD teacher and AgriQuest Department Leader Ellen Roehl will take the program to new heights by infusing curriculum resources from Pilot Light and incorporating Performance-Based Learning (PBL) and STEAM to inspire even more curiosity, creativity and career exploration among Johnstown students.

DID YOU KNOW... The Greater Johnstown School District is home to a museum that preserves Johnstown history and memorabilia dating all the way back to the 1700s!

Located in the historic "White House" behind Knox Middle School, the museum is operated by dedicated volunteers who welcome visitors and offer guided tours. Admission is free, and tours can be scheduled by calling or texting Jane Sitterly at (518) 774-6671.

The museum officially opened in May 2003 after the Johnstown Board of Education adopted a resolution earlier that year appointing William Pollak as its first curator. Since then, it has grown into a remarkable collection celebrating the district's rich history and traditions.

In recent years, volunteers have thoughtfully organized the museum's rooms to showcase different eras of Johnstown history, creating a chronological journey that makes it easy for visitors to explore the district's past.

At the end of this last school year, members of the Greater Johnstown Board of Education, along with Superintendent Alicia Koster and Assistant Superintendent Scott Hale, were invited to tour the museum. Their guides for the visit were three Knox Middle School students and longtime volunteer Jane Sitterly, whose knowledge and enthusiasm brought the exhibits to life.

Former Board of Education President Dave D'Amore, a proud Johnstown graduate, added a personal touch to the experience by sharing memories from his days as a Sir Bill. One of the tour's most memorable moments came when Mrs. Sitterly displayed a vintage silk-screened "Knox Knights" logo. Mr. D'Amore smiled and proudly told the group, "I created that!"

Visitors to the museum can explore exhibits featuring Mrs. Rose Knox, browse a collection of yearbooks dating back to 1925, view alumni class lists beginning in 1881, see vintage athletic uniforms, and discover countless other artifacts that tell the story of the Greater Johnstown School District and its community.

Whether you're a lifelong resident, a proud alumnus, or simply interested in local history, the Johnstown School District Museum offers a fascinating glimpse into the people and events that have shaped our community.

Come visit the Johnstown School District Museum - all are welcome!
