HFM Career and Technical Center

HFM Career and Technical Center Helping students make career choices is what the Career and Technical Center is all about.

Whether students graduate from high school and go to college or directly to work, they benefit from exploring different careers and learning marketable skills. The Center also helps students understand how academic skills in science, math and language arts are integrated into our technical program. We offer 16 career training courses for high-school age students from our 15 component school districts.

The students depicted in these photos recently completed their senior internships as part of the HFM CTE Foundations of Food Services program, a culminating experience following two years of Career & Technical Education training. Throughout the program, students developed skills in baking, food preparation, sanitation, safety, teamwork, and professional food presentation while gaining valuable hands-on experience through catering, school events, and work-based learning opportunities.

These senior internships provided meaningful real-world experience in professional kitchen and food service settings, helping prepare students for entry-level culinary careers and future employment opportunities. As a culminating CTE experience, this opportunity allowed students to apply the skills and work habits they built over the course of the program, reinforcing their readiness for both employment and continued education in the culinary field.

Student internship sites included Mama's Charcuterie, Italian Bistro, Amsterdam High School Cafeteria, Mayfield Central School Cafeteria, and Warren Street Elementary School Cafeteria.

Senior Veterinary and Animal Science students recently completed internships at a variety of local businesses and organizations, including Midvale Veterinary Clinic, Herkimer County Humane Society, Herkimer Veterinary Associates, Veterinary Specialties Referral Center, Country Valley Veterinary Clinic, Courtney's Grooming, Creek Acres Farm, Dellavalle Farm, and Montgomery County SPCA.

These internship experiences allowed students to apply the skills they developed through their Career & Technical Education (CTE) program in real-world professional settings while exploring careers in veterinary medicine, animal care, grooming, agriculture, and farm management. Throughout their placements, students assisted with daily animal care, observed veterinary procedures, developed workplace communication skills, and gained a better understanding of the expectations within these industries.

Through CTE, students built a strong foundation in animal science, professionalism, teamwork, and technical skills, helping prepare them for future education and careers in veterinary, agricultural, and animal-related fields.
