Today, the Warren County Sheriff's Office conducted self-led close-quarters battle training utilizing the MOUT (Military Operations on Urban Terrain) site at the Midwest Counterdrug Training Center.

MCTC’s training environments — including our MOUT site and live-fire ranges — are available for agencies to run their own specialized training, with optional support from MCTC role players and medical personnel. Visit the MCTC website to learn how your agency can utilize our facilities at no cost.

The MCTC is one of five National Guard counterdrug training centers in the nation. Led and operated by Iowa National Guard Soldiers and Airmen, the federally funded program delivers no-cost, specialized training to civilian law enforcement to strengthen drug detection and interdiction capabilities for local, state and federal partners nationwide.

Last week, students in the MCTC’s Physical Surveillance for Counternarcotic Missions course put classroom instruction into action through realistic street-based surveillance scenarios simulating drug trafficking activity. Using role players, covert communication and their own low-profile vehicles, students conducted foot, vehicle and static surveillance operations across urban environments while identifying and documenting simulated criminal activity in real time.

With 80 percent of the course focused on hands-on training, students sharpened their ability to track movements, maintain cover and coordinate as surveillance teams in dynamic environments designed to mirror real-world investigations.

What the target doesn’t hear.

Students communicate and coordinate while conducting surveillance on a Midwest Counterdrug Training Center role player posing as the target of an illicit drug investigation. Tracking movements, relaying updates and maintaining surveillance on foot and in vehicles is part of the practical exercise of the MCTC’s Physical Surveillance for Counternarcotic Missions course.
