Yesterday was volunteer firefighters recognition day. It occurs annually on August 18. It was first proclaimed in 1984 by President Ronald Reagan to honor the vital, selfless contributions of the roughly one million volunteer men and women who protect communities across the United States. In Iowa, approximately 92% of the fire departments are volunteer based.
Volunteer firefighters respond to emergencies at all hours, train year-round, and sacrifice time with their families to help others when they're needed most.
To every volunteer firefighter across Iowa - thank you for your courage, your commitment, and everything you do to keep your communities safe.
