Thinking about starting BJJ? Here's what actually matters in week one:

1. Learn, don’t try to win. Focus on recognizing basic positions (guard, side control, mount) and practicing what your instructor teaches. Remembering one movement or understanding where you are is a win in week one; you don’t need to submit anyone.

2. Breathe and slow down. Avoid holding your breath or trying to muscle through every position. During drills, move at a pace where you can follow the steps.

3. Move with control. Don’t yank grips or suddenly crank submissions. Being a safe, predictable partner matters more than moving fast.

Congratulations to Tao Zhang, associate professor of pharmaceutical sciences and director of the Pharmacokinetics and Bioanalysis Facility, who was just awarded a $250,000 one-year option from the FDA for his project evaluating the transfer of antidepressants into breast milk. Congrats to Tao and his team!

No classes this Saturday October 3. Our coaches are headed to different destinations to train and learn: Dylan Smith is off to IBJJF Pan Ams in New Jersey, Alex Sin is training with the team at Tristar Gym in Montreal, and James Rodriguez is attending the Kyle Boehm seminar at 10th Planet Bath.

Our coaches look forward to bringing what they learn back to the mats. Normal schedule Wednesday-Friday & Sunday!
