MCOM students recently traded the classroom for a day at the
United States District Court, Eastern District of Tennessee in Greeneville.
Assistant Professor of Journalism and Journalism Program Head, Senta Scarborough, felt it was crucial for her Reporting students to see first-hand what happens at a court hearing and learn how to cover them as reporters.
The field trip kicked off with students learning the ins and outs of a court docket and how to find federal court cases.
Assistant District Attorney Thomas McCauley discussed his career, job as a federal prosecutor, and the kind of cases he typically handles, including crimes involving children.
Students then attended a court sentencing in front of U.S. District Judge Clifton L. Corker. Judge Corker graciously stayed afterwards for a question-and-answer session with students.
A huge thank you to U.S. District Court, Eastern District of Tennessee Division Manager Jason Keeton for organizing the visit and Judge Corker and ADA McCauley for sharing their insights.
