Job Description



The Teacher of the Wesley Outreach Ministries Preschool at Wesley Memorial UMC plans and initiates the day-to-day activities of the children entrusted in his/her care, promoting State Licensure Guidelines, as well as the mission statement, goals, and curriculum of the Program as set forth by its governing Board (see Personnel Policy insert for a copy of curriculum guidelines). While creating a loving and nurturing Christian environment for all of the children, the Teacher monitors the facility for safety, health, and cleanliness issues, taking action to remedy immediate problems and reporting needs or concerns to the Program Director. The Teacher keeps daily attendance, lesson plans, and injury records for children in his/her care and maintains regular communication with children’s guardians via a weekly note (a copy of which is submitted to the Director for approval and kept on file) and/or monthly calendar of upcoming events. All records and communications are submitted to the Program Director in a timely manner. The Teacher is responsible not only for supervision and personal care but also for frequent interaction with the children entrusted in his/her care in all program settings (classroom, playground, gym, etc.). In case of absence, the Teacher is responsible for Substitute plans. In carrying out these responsibilities, the Teacher will act cooperatively and professionally in Christian fellowship with other employees building a spirit of teamwork.



Requirements for Employment

Must be at least 19 years of age
Manifest a concern and love of children
Have a college degree in early childhood, education, or related field OR certified/credentialed training (CDA) OR enrollment within first year of employment and completion within 3 years of employment into an accredited program to obtain certification as listed previously
Submit the following documentation for employee records:
q 3 references verified with follow-up interviews by phone (at least 2 professional, 1 personal)

q Certificate of Good Health signed by a local physician

q Certificates of Training and/or college transcript

q Driver’s license and Social Security Card

q Fingerprinting, Background Check, and Disclosure Form

q Certificates of completion of all required training within specified time period

q Attend staff orientation and complete checklist as listed in STAFF section of DHS Licensure Rules and UMAP standards

q Signed contract for the current school year



Preferences for Employment

Be of the Christian faith and an active member of a local church
Have at least 2 years accumulated experience working with children


Maintenance of Employment

Within first 30 days of employment, complete requirements as listed in STAFF section of DHS Licensure Rules and UMAP standards
Certificates of ongoing professional development as stated in Employee Benefits/Staff In-service Training

This session will be featured in the Early Literacy Track & will be led by Lori Hamilton and Renee Boyer. Dr. Lori Hamilton brings 12 years of public school experience in early childhood classrooms and 17 years of experience in higher education to her role as Department Chair of Early Childhood Education and Assistant Professor at Indiana Wesleyan University. Her experience in both PK–12 and higher education settings informs her passion for preparing intentional, reflective, and highly effective educators for today’s classrooms.
At IWU, Dr. Hamilton provides leadership for associate, bachelor’s, graduate, and certificate programs in early childhood education, including NAEYC-accredited licensure and non-licensure bachelor’s programs. She is also a faculty champion for AI within the School of Learning and Development, where she supports faculty AI literacy, AI-enhanced learning activities, and the ethical integration of AI in educator preparation.
Dr. Hamilton is passionate about helping preservice teachers bridge research and practice through developmentally appropriate, evidence-based instruction. She has presented regionally and statewide on topics including literacy instruction and Response to Intervention (RTI). She is deeply committed to fostering a culture of hospitality, encouragement, and mentorship within higher education, striving to ensure her students feel supported, valued, and equipped both personally and professionally throughout their educational journey.
Her professional interests include the Science of Reading, structured literacy, early literacy instruction, teacher preparation, instructional design, developmentally appropriate practice, ethical AI integration in education, and cultivating relationally supportive and student-centered online learning environments. Ms. Renee Boyer teaches and serves as Program Coordinator and Assistant Professor of Early Childhood Education at Indiana Wesleyan University. Prior to joining the university in 2012, Professor Boyer dedicated more than 24 years to advocating for, teaching, and serving children and families in the field of early childhood and public education. Renee Boyer is also the published author of the Boyer’s Barn House children’s series.
