The Arts Initiative is an ETSU and community movement to build a home for the arts for students and the region. Construction of the James C. and Mary B.

Martin Center for the Arts, next to Millennium Center, is expected to be completed in fall 2020.

Bucs Rock! premieres Friday, April 30, and will be available for an extended time. Directed by Cara Harker and Brad Fugate and starring many talented students – with help from ETSU Department of Music and ETSU Bluegrass, Old-Time, and Country Music Studies. King Lear also continues to be viewable on the Theatre & Dance website.

Thrilling news for students and fans of Scottish, Celtic and old-time music!

ETSU Bluegrass, Old-Time, and Country Music Studies

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Two new minors and new coursework are now available in the Bluegrass, Old-Time and Country Music Studies program in East Tennessee State University’s Department of Appalachian Studies. In addition to majoring in bluegrass, old-time and country music, students can now minor in Old-Time music and in Scottish and Irish music.

New classes in these genres offer unique, hands-on experiences for students to learn the music of their choice while immersing themselves in the culture that surrounds the music. Classes are now offered in fieldwork, archives and music collections, musicianship and artistry, study abroad, ballads, Gaelic language and culture, shape-note singing, audio production, traditional dance, and more.

Courses within Bluegrass, Old-Time and Country Music Studies are currently being offered both in-person (where appropriate) and online.
