As you may be aware, an endowment was created in 2022 to remember and honor our colleague and friend, Dr. Stanley L. Erney in perpetuity. Working together with the Erney family and the Upstate Foundation, the Dr. Stanley L. Erney Endowed Scholarship for Family Medicine was established as an investment in the future of Upstate Medical University students.
Nearly $30,000 has been raised, and we’re truly appreciative if you have already contributed to the endowment. However, we need to do more, and our goal is a minimum of $100,000. An endowment is a fund that is invested permanently.
At the Upstate Foundation, endowment spending is capped at 4 percent; a $100,000 endowment will generate about $4,000 annually in investment earnings that may be used for scholarships. As the endowment grows through the years, earnings will too,
and we will be able to provide an increasing amount of financial assistance for students.
Medical students often enter Upstate with high undergraduate debt, and the average medical student graduates from
Upstate with debts totaling more than $215,000. With the cost of education and supplies, housing and personal
expenses, this amount is only going to increase each year. By the time they have completed residencies and, in some
instances, fellowships, these students will have debt that is nearly unsurmountable.
Dr. Erney understood the critical importance of scholarships, and their role in valuing our students and supporting their
financial needs. He also appreciated that our ability to provide scholarships is dependent on the investments of loyal
alumni, grateful patients and families, and a supportive community.
Please join us in honoring our friend and colleague with a gift for the Dr. Stanley L. Erney Endowed Scholarship for Family
Medicine. To assist in our fundraising initiative, the Upstate Foundation has pledged to match up to $15,000 in total
donations through this current appeal. Your support is critically needed to grow this endowment.
You can make your donation by returning the enclosed form or donating online at
