What makes Milligan University so special For 160 years Milligan University has been shaping students in the mountains of northeast Tennessee.

This summer, rising junior Maddie Bennett traded the classroom for the hospitals, culture and coastline of northern Spain. 🇪🇸

A nursing major with a Spanish minor, Maddie spent five weeks at the University of Oviedo through a Maymester program hosted by the University of Oregon and Lipscomb University. She took Advanced Intensive Spanish for Healthcare Professionals and completed a medical internship in plastic surgery at the Central Hospital of Asturias.

The trip was made possible through support from Milligan and outside scholarships.

"I had completed a Spanish minor, but learning a language is not just limited to the classroom. This trip helped me be immersed fully in the culture and language of Spain and use real-world critical thinking and communication in Spanish. I learned so much, as no one spoke English."

Along the way, she explored Covadonga, the Cathedral, Luarca, Cudillero, the Roman Baths in Gijón, Cangas de Onís and Tapia.

Maddie says the experience helped her grow as a student and servant-leader.
