This week in “Where Are They Now” we caught up with Livia Berkhimer, a 2025 graduate of Cloudland High School. Livia began her college career in the fall of 2025 at Lees-McRae College in Banner Elk, NC. This fall Livia decided to transfer to ETSU. As of now, Livia is a Developmental Psych major but she is likely to change to her major to geology.
After completing her undergraduate degree, she plans to enroll in graduate school at Lees-McRae. Eventually she hopes to either work in the National Park System or eventually have her own practice.
Whatever path she chooses we know that she will be successful and continue to demonstrate the tenacity, initiative, and adventurous attitude and character that she has demonstrated. Livia also plans to work with Upward Bound this semester assisting with our Monday sessions.
Good luck Livia! We at UB are so proud of you and know great things are in store for you in the future.

The Sullivan East cross country team competed this past Saturday in Knoxville at Victor Ashe Park. ETSU Upward Bound students Ocean Johnson (701) and Ayden Walden (705) helped the Patriots to a successful day. Conrgratulations to Ocean and Ayden and good luck on the remainder of the season.

Sights from Friday Night Lights at Sullivan East last night. ETSU Upward Bound was well represented with numerous band members and dance team members. UB students in the band include Abigail Briney, Jada Bryant, Karma Gross, Kori Walenter, and Larry Wheeler. Dance squad members are Carmen Hammonds, AJ Jones, and Elisabeth Mullins. UB students showing their Patriot Pride were Makayla Coates, Sara Doss, Dixie Brown, Gabriella Phelan, Aubrey White, and Sebastian Morgan. Principal Hare even stopped by during his busy night for a photo op. Shout out to Karma Gross as it was her birthday last night. Happy birthday Karma!!!

Spotlight for this Friday is ETSU Upward Bound and Sullivan East senior Kendra King. This is Kendra’s third year in Upward Bound. Kendra has started a baking business with her friend and you can find her set up at the Bluff City Farmers Market on some Saturdays. Let’s get to know Kendra a little better.

Major: Sonography/Ultrasound
College interested: Northeast State
Career Plans: Lets finish my degree first.
Extracurricular Activities: HOSA and World Language Club
Hobbies/Interests: I do my own nails
Favorite UB Memory: Moving into the dorms in the summer with my best friend.
Piece of Advice for entering UB students: Go to every college visit and do the summer program if you can. You will learn so much.

The UB staff is so proud and excited for this super gifted student. We know Kendra is going to do great things and she is a genuinely sweet and nice person. Good luck on a fantastic senior year and beyond!

The ETSU Upward Bound students were busy this summer giving back to the community and local organizations. They spent time putting together Cuddle Buddies, blankets, and reusable shopping bags to be delivered to local organizations including Dolly Parton’s Childrens Hospital. The students worked hard, had a great time, and felt a sense of accomplishment for producing items that will go to good causes and be a blessing to others and hopefully touch lives. Special thanks to Ms. Amanda Worley for coordinating these activities.

Missed Senior Friday last Friday so making up for it today. Today the ETSU Upward Bound staff would like to spotlight September DeJoode a four year Upward Bound participant and Senior at Hampton High School. September is very involved in UB and her high school including numerous awards for dance competitions. Let’s get to know September a little better.
Name: September DeJoode
High School: Hampton High School
Major: Undecided
Colleges interested in: ETSU and Northeast State
Career Goals: To work with special needs children.
Extracurricular Activities: Cheerleading, dance, Career Connect, and FBLA
Hobbies/Interests: I like being outside, staying active, hanging with friends, working, dancing, and tumbling.
Favorite UB memory: I don’t necessarily have a favorite memory. All of them are my favorite. I love meeting new people every year and having fun with everyone.
Advice for new UB students: It really taught me how to get out of my comfort zone.
The UB staff is excited for September’s senior year and what this year and the future holds for such a talented, energetic, and positive person. We are confident that September is going to accomplish amazing things down the road.
