In a world where knowledge of any kind is accessible at the tips of our fingers, it just makes sense that teens and adults alike would seek out information on sexual health from online sources like social media. Unfortunately, a lot of the information frequently used is inaccessible, not inclusive, and at worst, inaccurate. The mission of this page is to provide a reputable, accurate, and inclusiv

e source of information for teens and their parents/guardians to get the facts they need to stay safe. Our hope is that information you find on this page can help supplement your own knowledge about sexual health and provide conversation starters for parents, teens, dating partners, and friends about sexual health and individual wellness.

The “attention economy”, defined as ‘the business models and designs that capture, track and monetize users’ time and attention’, is increasingly taking advantage of young children and youth. Just as it does in adults, digital platforms that emphasize visually engaging, short form content with minimal educational or developmental value negatively affects the youth who consume it.

Finding alternatives such as better, more intentional online content, engaging in offline activities and developing emotional regulation skills are critical, as well as taking a break from those platforms that serve up short form and AI generated videos. Many of our programs begin with group rules to help create an inclusive environment for everyone. One of them is to acknowledge intent over impact. What does that mean?

When we're learning and growing together, we're bound to make mistakes. It's human! Sometimes, we ask questions or make comments with good intentions but then actually hurt the feelings of someone else in the room. Even though hurting someone wasn't the intention, it happened, it's important for the individual to acknowledge the impact that has, apologize, and move forward. When we own our impact, we can learn more and then we do better! It's through this process we create inclusive, growing, and healing community spaces for all people, inside the classroom, and outside, (like on social media!). Any trusted adult can put this into practice and be a role model for the young people in their lives.

Intersectionality, a term coined by Kimberlé Crenshaw in 1989, is used to describe the way that various parts of a person's identity, whether that be race, gender, sexuality, ability, class, religion, etc. impact their lived experience. Intersectionality is an important framework in a lot of conversations, including CSE, because it recognizes that individuals should be addressed and are different based on lived experience.

We love to document our vacations, our travels and all of the big and small moments in between. We also love to share these pictures and videos on social media. However, as parents, caregivers and other trusted adults, it's important to be aware what and who we are sharing online, especially when it comes to the youth in our lives.

Next time you want to post your vacation or summer photo dump, consider how much personal information you're sharing, including the faces of kids and teens, whether they want to be in the photos or if they want their photos shared at all, and how widely you're sharing your photos or videos. 📾

As trusted adults, we set the example for how we want to young people in our lives to interact with social media. Click the link for more information on the concept of 'sharenting'.
