WHO ARE PLATINUM MINDS STUDENTS?

Since we started in 2007, we have been lucky enough to work with over 500 boys and young men. We provide the younger students (grades 1-5) with a strong foundation in reading. We offer a more comprehensive academic and leadership program to our older students (grades 6-12) in our Student Scholar programs. This year we have 23 Student Scholars from northern New Jersey including Newark, Asbury Park, South Orange, and Jersey City. Additionally, we have another 120 boys participating in our “Frederick Douglass Reading Programs” (grades 1-5) and “Connect to Your Dreams” (grades 5-8).

For the past month, I have been engaged in some refreshing and rewarding video tutoring. Using google docs and video apps, it has been cool to see how learning, learning how to write, does not have to be impeded by what's going on.

Had an inspiring session tonight with a high school freshman. I am finding half the battle is searching for and finding that captivated look on his face that lets me know he is buying into what we are covering. There is a lot to be gained from one-on-one work. It is possible to closely gauge exactly what the student is understanding. I've learned repetition and patience are powerful tools in tutoring. Staying patient and hoping for more nights like this one.
