This XPLORE challenge is the first in a series covering the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.
The Upper Peninsula Michigan (Part 1 of 5)
Colonial Michilimackinac
Start your journey into the Upper Peninsula (“UP”) with a stop at an 18th century archeological site featuring a fort and fur trading post. Dating back over 300 years, Fort Michilimackinac is a must see stop
Mackinac Island
Before venturing into the Upper Peninsula, experience how people traveled between the peninsulas before the bridge was built…by boat from Mackinac City. Numerous ferry services depart hourly from Mackinaw City. Mackinac Island famous for the absence of cars, its “world-famous” fudge, and some amazing views, it’s a place where old often meets new. After checking out the Grand Hotel Porch (mind the dress code!), grab a bike and explore the unique nature and historical sites on the island. Fort Holmes and the daily demonstrations at Fort Mackinac are worth checking out.
Mackinac Bridge
Built in the 1950s, the Mackinac Bridge is one longest suspension bridge in the world. It is the gateway for the first city you will encounter in the UP…St. Ignace. To see some incredible views, recommend that you drive across at sunrise or sunset. Regardless of when you cross, venture over to Bridge View Park for some incredible views (and lots of mosquitos).
Father Marquette National Memorial
Learn more about Native American history and early European exploration at this memorial to Father Marquette.
