For me and some of you, “22” is a memory: something in the past, a time we look back on.
But for this young lady, it’s the future. Something she hasn’t lived yet.

I can’t help but wonder what “22” feels like in her world right now. Maybe it’s just a fun song, maybe it’s confidence, maybe it’s a little bit of dreaming.

Either way, she’s right here, playing it in her own way, and that’s the best part. 💛🎸

My student saw “Lift Every Voice and Sing” in his school book and just decided to start practicing it on his own. No assignment. No pushing. Just curiosity and initiative.

That’s it. That’s the goal.

When a student can see music somewhere — in a book, at school, in the world — and think, “I can play that.” And then actually sit down and do it without needing me every step of the way… that’s the real win.

And this song is so meaningful, especially during Black History Month. “Lift Every Voice and Sing” has such powerful history and heart behind it — and watching him connect school, culture, and piano all together? I couldn’t be more proud. ❤️

This is why we do what we do.
