New Jersey City University Alumni

Finally, we are pleased to celebrate alumnus Bob Delaney ‘85, on his recent induction into the Irish American Hall of Fame!! 👏👏 A worthy national recognition for one of Jersey City’s legends.

Bob Delaney is a 1985 NJCU graduate, former New Jersey State Trooper, and longtime NBA referee whose career and personal resilience made him one of the university’s best-known alumni. He was inducted into NJCU’s Athletics Hall of Fame in 2006 and later became the namesake of the Robert J. Delaney Service Above Self Award, which NJCU created in 2020 to honor service and leadership. He also received the NCAA’s highest honor, the Theodore Roosevelt Award, in 2020, recognizing his distinguished contributions far beyond basketball. In addition to his work as an NBA official, Delaney spent years doing undercover police work investigating organized crime before turning to officiating, then went on to a distinguished NBA career from 1987 to 2011 that included more than 1,500 regular-season games, over 200 playoff games, and nine NBA Finals, along with assignments to the 1998 and 2011 All-Star Games. He concluded his career as NBA Vice President for Officiating.

Congratulations to NJCU alumnus Salvatore Goncalves ('76) on an extraordinary 50-year career in education, capped by his tenure as Superintendent of Bloomfield Public Schools since 2013.

A first-generation American raised in Bayonne by Portuguese and Italian immigrant parents, Sal earned his B.A. in Elementary Education with a minor in Sociology from NJCU. He went on to dedicate his entire career to Bloomfield, rising from sixth-grade teacher to superintendent — and earning recognition as the 2021-2022 Essex County Superintendent of the Year. Under his leadership, the district launched its one-to-one Chromebook program, opened the Early Childhood Center, and achieved three consecutive successful NJQSAC reviews.

From all of us at NJCU — thank you, Sal, and enjoy a well-deserved retirement.

It is with profound sadness that we share the passing of longtime and current adjunct professor and educator David Dunkel, in the Department of Teaching, Learning, and Literacy. Professor Dunkel died on May 20, 2026, at the age of 85.
