It is with profound sadness that we share the passing of longtime and current adjunct professor and educator David Dunkel, in the Department of Teaching, Learning, and Literacy. Professor Dunkel died on May 20, 2026, at the age of 85.

The following In Memoriam tribute was written by his colleague and friend, Scott Mittman, Ph.D., Interim Dean of the William J. Maxwell College of Arts & Sciences.

AFT Local 1839 has made a second major investment in the future of the Jersey City campus.

The union representing NJCU faculty, professional staff, and librarians has authorized a $25,000 restricted gift to the NJCU Foundation to support faculty research, scholarship, and academic initiatives — funding research stipends, conference participation, curriculum development, and student-engaged scholarly work.

This follows AFT Local 1839's initial $25,000 scholarship gift announced May 1. Together, these two commitments represent a $50,000 investment in the Jersey City campus, honoring a 52-year legacy while expanding opportunity as the campus enters its next chapter as part of Kean University.

As NJCU President Andrés Acebo said: "As we move toward the formation of Kean Jersey City and the opportunities that come with joining an R2-designated research university, our faculty and staff are not just witnesses to that transformation. They will be one of its architects."
