They say if you were a Matilda as a child, you grew up to be a Miss. Honey. ❤️

What is Mindset, really?
Sometimes, we need things explained to our inner children, so that it really feels good. So, that we get it.

After all, people think Gentle Parenting is about their kids, but it's about you. A lot of it is showing your own inner child that it is safe for YOU to be soft and do things differently than you experienced. (Read that again.)

But, today, I want to share the way that I explain "Mindset" to the young people in my life.

What is your Mind Set on?

What...is...your...mind...set...on?

What are you thinking about most often?

Is it learning?
Is it happiness?
Is it survival?
Think about it...

Now, what do you want its setting to be?
How can you get there?
Who can help you?
What books can you read?
What types of media can you take in?

Right now, my mind is set on joy.
It's set on connection.
It's set on being a more impactful educator next year.
It's set on Love.
Sometimes, we use a lot of trendy words, but talk to your inner child.
Make sure all of you is in full agreement and alignment.

What is YOUR mind set on?

As an educator who absolutely loves being an educator, I must say that some of my favorite years have been the mentor years I’ve now transitioned into.

Many of my students met me when they were 4 and 5 years old, and one incredible thing I deeply admire about the parents of the students I taught in Asia is that they nurtured our bonds. They created an avenue for me to guide their children not just for a school year, but throughout their lives.

Now, every year, I return to Korea and meet with many of my former students, who are now in their first, second, and third years of university. We talk about their goals, their struggles, and the different ways they’re learning to navigate their paths.

But most importantly, I get to remind them of the gifts they’ve always had inside.

I remember who loved science at a young age, who was always a brilliant problem solver, who asked thoughtful questions, who led with kindness, who needed a little extra encouragement, and who had a quiet light that was always there.

When they doubt themselves, I get to remind them of who they have always been on the inside. And I can tell those stories make a difference.

It also helps that I’ve always taken tons of photos as an educator, so I often have proof of just how talented, curious, and special they have always been.

Now that I’m visiting the States, it’s been a bit disheartening to hear how dismissive some people are of teachers.

Having a mentor who can guide you, write your recommendations, speak life into you, remind you of your gifts, and lift your chin when you need it is priceless.

I’m honored that I’ve had the opportunity to be that person for so many of my students.

And I’m even more honored that my “forever students” have grown to see me not just as the teacher they once had, but as someone who will always be cheering for who they are becoming.

That is the part of education people don’t always see.

Teaching does not end when the school year ends.

Sometimes, if we are lucky, it becomes a lifelong relationship of remembering, witnessing, and reminding young people of the greatness that has been inside them all along.

Every year, some Americans confuse "Memorial Day" with Veterans Day or Labor Day.

But... Memorial Day is a bit different.

Memorial Day is not a holiday. It's a Day of Remembrance.

What is Memorial Day?

Memorial Day is a day to commemorate those who died during military service.

It's a day to honor those who either died in battle or who suffered effects from battle that resulted in their death.

I can’t change the law. But, I can share the power of love and meaning.

Parents you can do this, too.
It doesn’t have to be a stone. It can be a barrette, a lego piece… anything. Just make sure it isn’t sharp.

Something that they can hold and even fiddle with if they need to charge themselves with courage, safety, or… love.

The next part is just as important: some children may feel major anxiety about losing their stone or love and safety object. Let them know that their love stone can’t be “lost.” When we carry them, we all become love fairies and when we are filled to the max our stone goes off to find someone who needs it. If you suddenly can’t find your stone, don’t worry.

If it breaks, it had a similar meaning. Your love power is soooo strong.

This may sound like it’s just for younger children, but it isn’t. For teens… I give them crystals or encourage them to write small notes to themselves that they keep in their pockets. Love is incredibly powerful and sometimes… it’s all we have.

I wish I could give you more and them more. Here is our start.

celebrate respectfully?

Cinco de Mayo is an annual celebration that takes place every May 5th. It's not really a celebration day. It's a day of Remembrance.
It's a reminder of Mexico’s victory over the French in the 1862 Battle of Puebla.

It was a big deal to defeat such a powerful army, like the French army. This was an important victory!

1. Support local Mexican businesses.

2. Support Organizations Working for Immigrant Rights.

3. Avoid Appropriation.

Let's dive in!

Mother’s Day is on its way! Let’s do it right this year!

Mother's Day is a very uncomfortable time for some people and school activities often magnify that discomfort.

Teachers, let's be proactive and use language and activities that give every child an opportunity to feel seen, heard, and supported.

When you know better, you do better.
