So what can parents actually do?

📚 1. Keep reading aloud. Talk about the story, ask questions, introduce new vocabulary, and let your child see that books are enjoyable.

🔤 2. Teach the code. Help them learn letter names and sounds, how sounds blend together, and how letters represent the sounds in words.

👂 3. Practice phonological awareness.
Play with rhymes, syllables, beginning sounds, and blending sounds orally.

✏️ 4. Give them a chance to read. Use decodable texts that match the phonics skills they’ve been taught so they can practice successfully.

🔁 5. Keep it short and consistent.
A few minutes of focused practice every day can be more effective than an occasional long session.

You don’t have to rush the routine. Give your kids time to adjust, reset, and ease back in.

As an educator and a parent I’ve sat on both sides of the table and sometimes when we hear something is working or something needs to be changed we can start to blame ourselves.

First and foremost, it’s not your fault. When your child is showing signs that they are in need of additional support, modifications or accommodations it can be a turning point to how your child is progressing.

Accommodations are changes that remove barriers and provide your child with equal access to learning. Accommodations don’t change what your child is learning, it just changes how your child is learning.

Here are five different types of accommodations that can be helpful in your classroom or home depending on the need of the child:

🌱 Presentation: A change in the way information is presented.

🌱Response: A change in the way a child completes assignments or tests.

🌱Setting: A change in the environment where a child learns.

🌱Timing and scheduling: A change to the time a child has for a task.

🌱Schedule: A change to the date a child is responsible for completing the task.

Regardless of where it happens, reading aloud is always beneficial. Today I had the opportunity to connect, collaborate and serve my community at WORD Jersey City by reading aloud “We’re Going on a Leaf Hunt” by Steve Metzger. This story is engaging, interactive and encourages you to sing along. The power of reading aloud goes beyond just being able to bond with your child. It supports all areas of literacy development, exposing students to new words and grammar, increasing students’ interest in reading and writing, and expanding skills like phonological awareness

Today was a beautiful reminder of why I love serving my community. Children are like sponges and want nothing more than to be able to connect with the world around them and curling up with a good book is a perfect way to start.

Follow for easy literacy tips that will help your kids read and write.

Did you know that the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that parents start reading out loud to their children from the time they are born. Reading aloud gives children a head start on developing their early literacy skills and listening skills.

Teachers, this one's for you!
A few weeks ago, I posted an article all about how parents could proactively communicate with us about their children- if you didn't get a chance to read it I encourage you to do so! Yet, today I'm sharing an article all about ways in which we can productively build relationships with our student's families.
