Prior Written Notice isn't a formality, it's required. Anytime your district proposes or refuses to change a student's identification, evaluation, placement, or services, the parent has to receive written notice explaining why. Skipping it, even with good intentions, is a compliance gap.

Some kids aren't choosing to be distracted.

They're overwhelmed. Their brains are bouncing from one thought to the next. They want to focus...they just don't know how to get there.

That's why I love giving students simple visual reminders instead of repeating, "Pay attention."

This workbook gives kids practical strategies they can actually try when they're distracted, worried, frustrated, angry, excited, or dealing with any other big feeling.

Instead of guessing what might help, they learn to recognize what they're feeling, understand what they need, and build a plan that works for them.

The goal isn't perfect behavior. It's helping kids become more independent, more self-aware, and better equipped to regulate themselves over time.

The behaviour you punish today could be a child's survival response.

The child who lashes out may be in fight mode. The one who runs away may be in flight. The child who goes quiet and seems to switch off may be frozen. The one who constantly tries to keep everyone happy may be fawning.

These are not choices. They are automatic survival responses that happen when a child feels unsafe, overwhelmed or frightened. Looking beneath the behaviour can completely change how we respond.

When we replace judgement with curiosity, punishment with connection, and ask "What has happened to this child?" instead of "What is wrong with this child?", we give children a much better chance to heal.

Too many children are labelled as naughty, defiant, manipulative or attention-seeking when they are actually doing what their nervous system believes is necessary to survive.
