This week, Abington Friends School had the great privilege to host the first annual Friends Forward Conference for Quaker School Professionals, a joy-filled gathering of nearly 150 Friends School educators from around the country (and one from England!).

Over the three days, our halls were filled with professional learning, new friendships, and renewed connection to our collective missions.

Many thanks to our steering committee members from four schools: Sidwell Friends School, Carolina Friends School, Friends Seminary, and of course Abington Friends School. Additional thanks to all of our presenters and workshop leaders, including our three keynote speakers Lauren Brownlee, Gardy Guiteau, and Allyx Schiavone.

We're excited to share a more photos and stories from the event in the coming weeks.

Happy Pride Month from AFS! 🏳️‍🌈

Before school let out students across all three divisions came together to celebrate the LGBTQIA+ community and the freedom to be their authentic selves. Students marched in a mini-parade, made Pride themed arts and crafts and enjoyed some sweet treats. How did you celebrate this month?

After 21 years of teaching at AFS, beloved Upper School history teacher Drew Benfer has retired. Across the years, students in his classes were transported to the eras they studied, engaged deeply in the materials they covered and left his tutelage with the confidence to research and analyze the moments that matter.

Thank you, Drew for your passion, excellence, kindness and community spirit which you've shared with us for so long. Go well, and don't forget to visit!

Before graduation, Seniors and their Pages gathered for a pizza celebration and the unveiling of Abington Friends' 2025-2026 yearbook. Much love to this year's crew of Global Travelers, who braved three exciting adventures!

This week, we are highlighting our students who journeyed to Hurricane Island, a carbon neutral island community in northern Maine. Our travelers explored the intertidal environment and its terrestrial ecology, generated questions, and conducted field experiments. Students collected data around the island as part of a personal research project, maintaining a consistent sampling protocol, synthesizing and presenting their data, and finally holding a debrief of the scientific process.

"I was driven by the desire to say 'yes' to anything offered," reflected one student. "Things I thought to be too much for me, I was able to handle far better than I expected. Despite my innate reservations, I ate raw scallop during a dissection and jumped off the pier into the freezing Atlantic. I never once regretted my decisions."

Each Spring AFS honors our student athletes who have demonstrated perseverance, sportsmanship, dedication, and excellence throughout both the year and across their entire athletic careers at Abington Friends.

This year's highlights included:

🏅Henry Sylva '26 and Harrison Dowdy '26 were recognized for their participation in AFS athletics for 12 consecutive seasons during their Upper School careers.
🏅 Myles Griffin '26 was honored with a 100+ wins banner which will hang in the gymnasium of the Berman Athletics Center.
🏅The AFS Wresting team also received a banner honoring their breakout season as FSL 2025-2026 champions.
🏅🏅Two athletes received multi-sport Edward G. Thode Athletics Awards, an award given to Varsity athletes who, "through the consensus of the players and the coaches, best represents the team and the school". Leila Wang '27 won for Swimming and Ultimate Frisbee while Jada Downs '29 won for both Indoor Track and Outdoor Track & Field.

When learning leaves the classroom, our students follow! This week Upper School students finished ExTerm, an experiential program replacing traditional subject area finals. This year...

🌉Students engineered and refurbished an on-campus bridge.
🎶One group explored the science of sound to build and play their own musical instruments.
🎭Another group took the lead producing, lighting and live streaming our Lower School spring program.

Others explored museums, the FIFA invasion, the natural beauty of the Wissahickon, the purpose of museums; they investigated dreams, hip hop, gender expression, D&D, graveyard restoration, the power of art, Puerto Rican culture and more.
