Abington Friends School AFS is a college-preparatory school for students from age 3 through Grade 12 Founded in 1697, AFS is one of the oldest schools in the nation.

A Quaker school in culture, not just in name, AFS provides a high-performing academic program in which students are given the tools they need to discover and pursue their purpose and to ultimately transform the world. AFS has grown since its founding more than three centuries ago, but it maintains its strong sense of community. The school's dynamic teaching and learning environment includes an Experiential Learning Center devoted to the Quaker principle that experience is a student's most powerful teacher. The Center acts as the engine that runs an interdisciplinary experiential learning model throughout the school.

What do fourth graders and AP Computer Science students have in common? A willingness to puzzle through a problem together. 💻🔢

This week, Upper School AP Computer Science students stepped into the role of teachers by introducing fourth graders to binary, the system computers use to represent information using just two digits: 0 and 1.

For younger students, the lesson was a chance to encounter numbers from an entirely new angle: looking for patterns, testing ideas and discovering that there can be more than one way to represent the same value.

“Working in binary asks students to temporarily set aside our base-ten number system and learn to see numbers differently,” Upper School teacher Eugene Feeley shared. “That kind of mental flexibility is powerful. They have to puzzle, notice patterns and build their own understanding of how the system works. Often, it can even unlock new ideas about how ‘normal’ math works!”

From soil to skillet. 🥔🌱

Middle School students in Gardening Club recently harvested potatoes from AFS Small Farms, then took the next step: preparing and cooking what they had grown.

It’s a simple process, but a meaningful one—students seeing where food comes from, working with their hands and following their learning all the way from planting to plate.

A pretty delicious example of experiential learning at AFS. 🦘

🌟 Congratulations to four AFS seniors recognized by the 2027 National Merit Scholarship Program!

Joseph Lee ’27 and Radha Airan-Javia ’27 have been named National Merit Semifinalists, placing them among the highest-scoring entrants in Pennsylvania and giving them the opportunity to advance in the competition for National Merit Scholarships. Alongside them, Dillan Shafer ’27 and Eli Belotserkovskiy ’27 have been named Commended Students, earning national recognition for their outstanding performance on the PSAT.

Congratulations to our seniors for their dedication and achievement! 👏💙

Happy Pride Month from AFS! 🏳️‍🌈

Before school let out students across all three divisions came together to celebrate the LGBTQIA+ community and the freedom to be their authentic selves. Students marched in a mini-parade, made Pride themed arts and crafts and enjoyed some sweet treats. How did you celebrate this month?
