TEDX afs

TEDX afs TEDx is a local event created in the spirit of TED. Abington Friends School is excited to be hosting its own Tedx event here at the school on May 21st 2011.

The goal of this event is to tap into some of the great minds associated with our school, and hear what they are passionate about. TED’s tag line - “Ideas Worth Spreading” provides a great conceptual framework for our own event. What makes TED and TEDx events so compelling and interesting, is the passion behind the speaker, the range of presentations and the willingness of the audience to listen and engage.

Exposure to nature and the outdoors makes kids stronger, smarter, healthier, and able to perform better on standardized tests. It alleviates the symptoms of ADD, makes kids nicer and teaches them how to play. But children today have retreated into the indoor world of laptops, TV, DVDs, iPods, cell phones and more, and rarely spend time outside. Come learn surprising and uplifting research on the connection between kids and nature, and the movement to plug kids back into the outdoors.

From Shakespeare building on the work of Greek comedy to Muddy Waters reintroducing the music of black slaves to a new generation; literature, art and music has always been re-adapted, remixed and re-imagined. But copyright restrictions have made it increasingly difficult for today’s artists to build upon creative works of the past. In this presentation Joel and Dov will take you to the front lines of the copyright war where a generation raised on free mp3 downloads and YouTube, through its music, video, dance and technological innovation is attempting to bring us into a post-copyright era.

Big Numbers
What makes a number big? How can we better understand the barrage of statistics we get every day from the media? What makes an event probable or improbable? These are just some of the questions Justin Solonynka will ponder in a presentation that combines musings on numeracy with sleight of hand card tricks — and is 99% sure to leave audiences with a greatly invigorated sense of numeracy.
