What are the two "medallions" on Gary's guitar strap? They are Native American Sioux Mandalas, which have a specific meaning given their design. The meaning of mandala comes from Sanskrit meaning “circle.” Even though it may be dominated by squares or triangles, a Mandala has a concentric structure. Mandalas offer a great way for the mind, spirit and body to balance and find harmony. The ones he wore are for the life giving power of the sun combined with the ever-present spirit of the wind. The two together give a unique and intimate perspective of the powers of nature. When focused upon, the essence of who we are falls into the meaning of the mandala, and we see how the philosophical energies of the sun and wind can positively change the entire structure of our lives. How does this apply to Gary? It's easy to understand how he felt if you listen to "Wild As The Western Wind" which he wrote and sang on the fourth album "Lost In A Dream". The words to the song reference both the sun and the wind, and his desire to be free. It also sings, "Red man's become his friend when no one else would have him, There's an Indian woman who keeps him from being alone, She stands tall by his side, but the law's got him out on a limb." This song reflect a period where his bonds and spirituality with the mid western Sioux tribes was something he felt very strongly about.
