New design. Side chair with walnut seat and crest and white oak legs and lumbar spindles. Finished natural with Minwax tung oil finish. The crest ends are carved in a horn motif.

Figured Mahogany 8/4 glued up seat blank for the Webster Settee(see thumbnail). The crest will be from the same board. Choosing board orientation is nerve wracking. Which way will display the figure at its most beautiful?

Wipe on wipe off Minwax Tung Oil Finish, a tung oil based varnish which takes a minimum 24 hours to dry between coats. Do three coats minimum. If you find the oil getting sticky at the wipe off stage, then do the chair in parts. I recommend two coats right away and the third coat in a month. Rub with fine abrasive pad between coats.

Hold the dye rag in one hand and the water rag in the other. With the dye rag dye the spindle flat. As the dye runs down the front into the hollow of the seat blend it with the water rag giving a dark to light effect. Look at it. If there is anything you don't like you must change it now. Areas that are too dark can be diluted with the water rag. Areas that are too light get more dye. If there is a dye line, blend it with first the dye rag and then the water rag. Check the outside edge of the seat for overrun and blend it with the well wrung out water rag. Use the wrung out water rag to blend any overlap lines or drips anywhere on the chair. Allow to dry.
