20th Annual Missouri Bluebird Society Conference

Sunday morning birdwalk and brunch at the Miller Family Cabin. Yes, Ivan and Anna May fed us again! As always, the food was delicious and the walk was so beautiful. They have really created a wildlife paradise. I'll let the pictures speak for themselves. Thanks Terry for being our guide.

Delicious food and fun visiting with friends. Many were reminiscing about Jim and about previous conferences.

20th Annual Missouri Bluebird Conference

Katherine Martin, MOBS Newsletter Editor, was our next speaker giving us the lowdown on another non native species to watch for in our bluebird boxes, the Eurasian Tree Sparrow. While similar in looks to the House Sparrow it is slightly smaller in size and has a small black spot on each cheek. Population is mainly in the St. Louis area and spreading north.

20th Annual Missouri Bluebird Conference

After lunch, Ivan Ray Miller had the unfortunate task of trying to keep us all awake but when he mentioned fishing for starlings, he had us hooked!

Ivan also gave a wonderful talk about purple martins. We learned about a purple martin banded by Ivan that returned to the same colony for 11 years making it the 2nd oldest purple martin recorded! WOW!

20th Annual Missouri Bluebird Conference

Ron Darling was the last speaker before lunch and I didn't envy him. We could smell Anna Mae's lunch cooking and it was hard to concentrate!

Ron talked about research he had done on Prothonotary Warblers in Michigan with one of the more interesting things being, face the box towards the water whichever direction that might be. I'm hoping that by making that simple change on my trail I'll have the same good luck!

Between speakers, attendees were encouraged to buy raffle tickets and to bid on items donated to Missouri Bluebird Society. So many beautiful items were donated and are greatly appreciated. MOBS board member Greg Samuels is also greatly appreciated for all of his hard work getting these items together. He was flying solo this year and did a great job but we all missed you Laura!
