Instructor Boot Camp Weekend is COMPLETE!

What a weekend! These guys put in over 40 hours in just three days working toward becoming SSI Instructors; classroom work, presentations, testing, skills, pool work, open water, and a whole lot of hard work.

And they’re not done yet! They have two more training sessions before taking their SSI Instructor Evaluation next weekend.

Becoming a scuba instructor takes a tremendous amount of time, preparation, commitment, and determination, and this group has absolutely put in the work.

I couldn’t be prouder of every one of them. Now get some rest, you’ve earned it!

Wreck diving, sharks cruising by, and digging around the bottom finding a bunch of shark teeth… doesn’t get much better than that! 🤿🦈

Days like this are exactly why we dive. A little history, a little treasure hunting, some incredible encounters, and a whole lot of time underwater.

Not much more fun than this!

There are wreck dives, and then there are wrecks where the history hits you the second you drop down on them.

The Caribsea sits about 90 feet down off Cape Lookout, North Carolina. On March 11, 1942, she was carrying 3,600 tons of manganese ore from Cuba to Norfolk when the German submarine U-158 put a torpedo into her shortly after 2:00 in the morning.

She went down incredibly fast. There wasn’t time to launch the lifeboats or even send a distress call. Of the 28 men aboard, only 7 survived. Twenty-one men died. The survivors spent roughly 10 hours clinging to wreckage in the Atlantic before they were finally rescued.

More than 84 years later, we’re diving what remains of her.

The boilers, engine and twisted steel are still scattered across the bottom, but today the wreck has another kind of crew. Sand tiger sharks patrol above it, sometimes passing close enough that you can see every tooth.

That’s what makes diving these North Carolina wrecks so incredible. You’re surrounded by sharks and marine life, but underneath all of it is the wreckage of a ship and the story of 21 men who never made it home.

Pretty humbling to swim through a piece of World War II history and realize that on one dark night in 1942, this was anything but a dive site.
