Pursue Combat Academy

Pursue Combat Academy We train not to simply learn how to fight, but to learn how to abstain from fighting.

It can be argued that it is not difficult for one to throw a punch; however, the greater test is in not throwing a punch. The goal of this school is to help the students become thoughtful citizens who care deeply for their peers. The school's atmosphere is not one of competition towards one to another, just towards one's self.

In Jeet Kune Do, we practice the philosophy: longest weapon to the nearest target.

Kicks - using our longest weapons first
Punches - closing the distance and transitioning naturally
Trapping - controlling the opponent once we’re in range
Ground Prevention - staying on our feet and preventing the fight from going where we don’t want it to go

The goal isn’t to memorize a sequence. It’s to understand distance, timing, positioning, and transitions so we can adapt to what’s actually happening in front of us.

Sifu Corena Patton was recently asked the following questions:

1. Where are you from, and how long have you been training in Jeet Kune Do?
2. As a third-degree black sash, what has been the most challenging part of your journey so far?
3. Growing up as the owner’s daughter, how did that influence your path in martial arts? Was it something you felt drawn to, expected to continue, or both?
4. As a woman in martial arts, what challenges have you faced, and what advice would you give to other women or girls who may be interested in starting their martial arts journey?
5. What’s one fun or random fact about you that students might not know?

Corena Patton was born in Morristown, Tennessee, and currently resides in Jefferson City, Tennessee. She began training in Jeet Kune Do at the age of 10, took a four-year break during her journey, and has a total of 13 years training experience.

When she became a third degree black sash, Corena found that the expectations naturally increased. Not only was she required to properly execute techniques, but she also began taking on a more active instructional role with newer students. Learning to balance continued personal growth while also developing as an instructor became one of the most defining/challenging aspects of her martial arts journey.

Growing up as the owner’s daughter, Corena explains that her connection to martial arts developed naturally over time. Watching her father dedicate so much passion and effort to Jeet Kune Do made it something she was naturally drawn to. While she never felt forced into the path, she acknowledges that she would have felt like she was letting herself down if she hadn’t continued in it. Over time, what began as influence evolved into genuine passion, and Jeet Kune Do definitely became an important part of her identity.

As a woman in martial arts, Corena notes she hasn’t experienced a specific challenge simply because she is female. While women may not always have the same size, strength, or speed advantages as some men, she believes that’s what makes martial arts so valuable, it pushes both mental and physical limits. Having trained for so long, she has no hesitation partnering with anyone in class, and her advice to women and girls is to not be intimidated. She feels fully comfortable training with anyone and adds that if she can take time off for motherhood and return, anyone truly can do it.

Outside of martial arts, Corena does makeup for weddings, which is why she is often seen training with a full face of makeup. She enjoys experimenting with products and jokes that there is no better real-world test than training hard, sweating, and sometimes getting punched in the face while sparring.

Master Instructor Sifu Xavier Reed was recently asked the following questions:

1. Where are you from, and how long have you been training in Jeet Kune Do?
2. When did you know you wanted to start helping teach, and what was that transition like for you?
3. As a fourth-degree black sash, what has been the most challenging part of your journey so far?
4. Growing up as the owner’s son, how did that influence your path in martial arts? Was it something you felt drawn to, expected to continue, or both?
5. What’s one fun or random fact about you that your students might not know?

Xavier Reed was born in Knoxville, Tennessee, and has lived in Jefferson City, Tennessee his entire life. He has been training in Jeet Kune Do for 17 years, beginning his journey at the age of 8.

From early on in his training, Xavier felt a strong desire to be available to other students and help them with whatever they needed. After earning his black sash, he felt it became his responsibility to understand the art more in depth and fully embrace a teaching role while continuing to remain a student himself. The transition into teaching felt natural, as Jeet Kune Do has always been his passion. He finds great fulfillment in being able to express that passion in a way that helps others grow and become better martial artists.

As a fourth-degree black sash, Xavier reflects on his martial arts journey as one he has genuinely enjoyed in its entirety. While he does not pinpoint a single defining moment as the most challenging, he acknowledges that there were difficult classes and demanding experiences along the way. These moments, however, were welcomed as part of his growth. He consistently sought to be pushed and to improve, understanding that progress requires discipline, consistency, and hard work. Rather than discouraging him, these challenges strengthened his commitment and deepened his passion for the art.

Growing up around martial arts, Xavier believes he was drawn to it long before he officially began training. His Pop often shared stories of him standing on the other side of a baby gate, watching him and Sifu Parker train in the living room. By the time he was old enough to begin training, martial arts already felt like a major part of his identity. He compares his connection to Jeet Kune Do to the way many children inherit a love for their favorite football team from their parents. While growing up as the owner’s son certainly influenced his path, his passion for the art developed naturally and became his own.

Outside of martial arts, Xavier enjoys running and sim racing. Running provides another outlet for staying active and challenging himself, while sim racing offers a fun way to relax and enjoy a bit of friendly competition. Whether he’s on a run or behind a virtual steering wheel, he appreciates having hobbies that keep him engaged outside of Pursue Combat Academy.

Meet the man behind the legacy.

At Pursue Combat Academy, martial arts is more than training. It’s family, discipline, tradition, and purpose. From discovering martial arts as a child in Okinawa, Japan, to decades of training, teaching, and passing knowledge to the next generation, Sifu Jeremy Reed’s journey reflects dedication and a lifelong passion for growth.

Get to know the story, experience, and heart behind the instructor who continues to shape students, family, and future generations at Pursue Combat Academy.

Sifu Jeremy Reed was born in Twenty-Nine Palms, California, to Marcus and Sandra Reed. Jeremy’s father, a retired Lt. Col. in the USMC, was stationed in various locations around the world. In the 1980s, Lt. Col. Reed received orders to be stationed in Okinawa, Japan. While in Japan, Sifu Reed went on an elementary school field trip to an Okinawan police training academy, where he was introduced to judo. This experience immediately drew him to martial arts.

Jeremy began training in his early teens. He holds belts in Taekwondo and Tang Soo Do, as well as an honorary black belt in Sanuces Ryu Jujutsu. He competed on the tournament circuit in Southern Maryland, earning multiple sparring medals and Championship Titles. In the mid-90s, he began training under Sifu Andre Parker in Western boxing and Jeet Kune Do (The Way of the Intercepting Fist). Sifu Andre Parker is a second-generation Bruce Lee student who earned his instructor’s license under the late Sifu Jerry Poteet. He was also mentored by other original students, including the late Sifu Jesse Glover and the late Sifu Ted Wong. Sifu Reed became Sifu Parker’s senior student and was later promoted to apprentice instructor at age 19. In 2002, Sifu Reed was inducted into the Black Belt Hall of Fame in Orlando, Florida.

Sifu Reed’s school, Pursue Combat Academy, is in Jefferson City, TN. He teaches alongside his two eldest children, Master Instructor Sifu Xavier Reed, age 25, and Sifu Corena Patton (formerly Reed), age 27. He also teaches his younger sons, Judah, Soren, and Rory, as well as his wife, April Reed.

After years of training and teaching, he trained alongside Sifu Ted Wong during a weekend retreat in the 2000s. Sifu Reed stated that as he watched Sifu Wong move and hit the heavy bag, he saw the essence of Bruce Lee. Sifu Wong inspired him to keep training regardless of his age. His goal now, after years of training and teaching martial arts, is to watch his grandchildren train in The Way of the Intercepting Fist.
