Senior Spotlight: Tamika Callaway – Cosmetology Student

What is your favorite service(s)? Finger waves

Where do you plan on working when you graduate? Jefferson City

What made you choose a career in Cosmetology? I’ve always enjoyed making people feel good about themselves.

What is one way Merrell University has prepared you for the beauty industry? Merrell University has helped prepare by teaching me shear cutting. Shear cutting was an unfamiliar skill for me coming into Merrell University, now it is a skill I’ll take with me. It will start the foundation to many great styles in the future.

What are some of your passions/ hobbies outside of Cosmetology? My passion is to care for people and make people smile, one hair appointment at a time.

What are a few characteristics about yourself that will make you successful in the beauty industry? I’m outgoing, always willing to learn, and a good listener.

What is your favorite retail product? Paul Mitchell Super Skinny Smooth Serum

👀 We’ve heard the rumors… and apparently we need to clear something up. 😂 Merrell University is NOT FOR SALE! ❤️

We’ve had several people reach out after seeing some pretty vague advertising about a “Beauty School for Sale in Central Missouri,” and we completely understand the confusion. So, just to make sure there’s no question . . . it’s not us! 😅

While there may be a beauty school for sale somewhere in Central Missouri, you’ll have to look further down the road.

We’re right here in Jefferson City, doing what we’ve been doing for decades, training the next generation of beauty professionals, serving our community, and looking forward to what’s ahead. ✂️💈✨

Same Merrell. Same family. Same mission. And absolutely no plans of going anywhere. ❤️

Senior Spotlight: Maéva Fiagan - Esthetics Student

What are your favorite services?
Facials, especially corrective skincare, and waxing. I love customizing treatments to each client’s needs and helping them feel confident in their skin.

Where do you plan on working?
I plan to work at a spa in Kansas City, MO while growing my beauty business, Lumière. My long-term goal is to build Lumière into a luxury beauty and wellness empire where people feel seen, cared for, and elevated.

What made you choose this career?
I’ve always had a passion for beauty. I love the combination of science, creativity, and connecting with people. Esthetics allows me to help others feel good about themselves while growing in an industry I genuinely love.

How has Merrell University prepared you for your career?
I learned that being a great beauty professional requires more than technical skills. Attention to detail, communication, professionalism, sanitation, continued education, and truly listening to clients are essential. My clinic floor experience helped me apply these skills with real clients and build confidence in my abilities.

What are some of your passions/hobbies outside of esthetics?
Traveling, art, wellness, family and loved ones, trying new experiences, and I’m definitely a foodie! I also love being creative and continuing to grow personally and professionally.

What three characteristics will make you successful in this industry?
Resilient, audacious, and charismatic.

What is your favorite retail product at Merrell?
I don’t have just one! My go-to IMAGE Skincare products are ILUMA Intense Brightening Serum and Exfoliating Cleanser, VITAL C Hydrating Anti-Aging Serum, Hyaluronic Acid Enhancer, and Daily Prevention Hydrating Moisturizer SPF 30. SPF is always a must!

For the record, all are welcome in every program! ❤️ It just so happens our cosmetology crew is currently all girls. 😂 The barbers like to joke about being outnumbered, but these two groups have become one big crew and work so well together. 💈✂️❤️
They give each other a hard time, cheer each other on, and somehow the barbers have become honorary members of the cosmetology crew. 😂
