University of Florida - Jay Research Facility The Jay Research Facility is part of the University of Florida Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences.

In 1946, the Experiment Station in Jay opened its doors for the purpose of agricultural research in areas relevant to local growers. The Experiment Station, now referred to as the Jay Research Facility, is still creating knowledge for distribution through the UF/IFAS Extension efforts. The West Florida Research & Education Center (WFREC) is your local University of Florida campus in Milton and Jay

The students who took Fire Ecology and Management last spring completed a Fire Field Day training with the Blackwater River State Forest Training Officer and earned their Fire Fighter Type II Certificates. During the training, they learned how to properly deploy fire shelters, cut firebreaks, and successfully passed an exam covering fire behavior and safety.

Take a minute and check out Nkem Nwosu's article on "Nitrogen management for industrial h**p fiber production" that was featured in the American Society of Agronomy (ASA) Crops & Soils Magazine for September Issue.

The article examined industrial h**p cultivar differences in biomass responses to nitrogen rates for fiber production. The study was conducted here in WFREC in Jay.

Exploring the future of sustainable turfgrass management! 🌱⛳

Cecelia Sanchez Quintanilla is conducting turfgrass research focused on low management, low input ground cover alternatives for golf courses. These trials require little to no fertilizer while evaluating practical options for reducing maintenance without sacrificing performance.

Research plots are being compared across multiple locations, including Gainesville, Fort Lauderdale, and right here, providing real world data and recommendations for turf managers throughout Florida.

It’s exciting to see science helping shape more sustainable solutions for the future of turfgrass management!

🌱 A Typical Day of Turfgrass Maintenance 🌱

Keeping turfgrass looking healthy, uniform, and ready for play takes a lot more than simply mowing the grass! 💪🏼🌿

Payton Holland spends plenty of time out on the turf, making sure it receives the care and attention it needs. From mowing and maintaining the proper height, to keeping the surface healthy and consistent, every pass makes a difference.

It’s early mornings, long days, attention to detail, and a whole lot of hard work behind the scenes that keeps a turfgrass field looking this good. 🚜🌱

Healthy turf doesn’t happen by accident. It’s maintained with consistency, knowledge, and dedication!

The UF/IFAS West Florida Research and Education Center (WFREC) and SR Department of Corrections spent the morning planting 2,500 collard transplants! 🌱
These locally grown collards will be part of traditional holiday meal boxes provided to more than 1,000 families across Santa Rosa and Escambia counties. In partnership with Feeding the Gulf Coast, families will receive boxes filled with turkey, sides, breads and pastries, along with locally grown collards, cabbage, turnips and sweet potatoes.
We’re proud to grow fresh, locally produced food and partner with organizations working to make the holidays a little brighter for families in our communities.
