Dixie Freedom Colony awarded Texas Historical Marker
Aug 13, 2018

The Texas Historical Commission has awarded a Texas Historical Marker to the DIXIE FREEDOM COLONY. This marker was awarded through the Undertold Marker Program. This program was created to recognize subjects that are important to local and state history and might not otherwise be remembered. Recognition through this program is not easily achieved. Only 15 of these markers are awarded each year in the whole state of Texas.

The Jasper County Historical Commission submitted an application earlier this year on behalf of the COMMUNITY AND FAMILY HISTORICAL PRESERVATION ASSOCIATION. This organization was formed by members of the Dixie Community located near Bevilport. They are headquartered where the old George Washington Carver School was located and have established a Community Connection Center for use by the community. They’ve dedicated themselves to preserving the history of their community and passing it on to future generations.

As the process moves forward we will be providing a comprehensive history of this community to the THC historians in Austin so they can write an inscription for the marker. Once this inscription has been approved an order will be sent to the foundry (Southwell Company in San Antonio) to cast the new marker.

Since this marker will be placed on FM2799 in front of the Community Connection Center, the marker will be shipped to the local TxDOT facility to be installed by them on their right of way. After the installation is complete a marker dedication ceremony will be held.
