Today was a very special day as we welcomed our youngest Vikings for the first day at the new Jasper City Schools Pre-K Center! 🖤💛

Our new center is officially filled with little learners, big smiles, and lots of excitement! We are so proud to have four Alabama First Class Pre-K classrooms together in one space designed especially for our youngest students.

Speakers included AEA representative Linda Shirley and superintendent Dr. Ann Jackson, and a number of longtime JCS employees were recognized for their service, including Beckie Martin, who has worked for JCS for 50 years and was honored with her picture on a Wheaties box. The guest speaker was Patrick George, who serves as Coordinator of Student Leadership Programs at Auburn University.

Jasper City Schools’ students
recognized during school board meeting

A number of students were recognized for their recent accomplishments during Monday’s Jasper City Board of Education meeting held in the Pam Brown Theater at the high school.

Those recognized were:

• Davis Getter, who recently graduated from the 27th session of the FBI National Academy Associates Youth Leadership Program in Quantico, Va.

• Jasper High students Tommy Wayne Knotts, C**t Wayne Levan and Jayden Tyler Whitfield — along with Tristan Blake Gilbert and Carlos Daniel Camargo of Carbon Hill High School and Jayden Bailey of Curry High School — who recently completed the 2026 Summer HVAC Fast Track Program at the Heman Drummond Center of Innovation.
The program — in its inaugural year and the first of its kind in the state — was sponsored by The Southern Company, along with Jasper City Schools and Walker County Schools.

• Jasper High fishing team members Cade Hartley and Cade Richards, who finished third in the Senior High Division of the State Championships, and Jasper Junior High students Elijah Kirkland and Noah Pittman, who finished second in the Junior High Division of the State Championships.

• Brodey Garrett, a member of the outdoor track program who finished fourth in the decathalon at the Class 6A state championships.

• Scout Barber, a member of the women’s tennis team who represented Jasper High School at the 2026 AHSAA North/South All-Star Games.

• Ethan Thorne, a member of the men’s tennis team who represented Jasper High School at the 2026 AHSAA North/South All-Star Games.

• Axel Gomez, a member of the JHS men’s soccer team who was recognized as an AHSAA Class 6A All-State Second Team selection. Gomez was a three-time All-State selection.

• Mariana Rigsby, a member of the JHS women’s soccer team who was an AHSAA Class 6A All-State Honorable Mention selection.

• Cesar Ponce, a member of the JHS men’s soccer team who was an AHSAA Class 6A All-State Honorable Mention selection.

• Juan Carlos Ponce Perez, a member of the JHS men’s soccer team who was an AHSAA Class 6A All-State Honorable Mention selection.

• Keyla Perez, a member of the JHS women’s soccer team who was an AHSAA Class 6A, Area 13 All-Area selection.

• Zoe Cummins, a member of the JHS women’s soccer team who was an AHSAA Class 6A, Area 13 All-Area selection.

• Mia Walton, a member of the JHS women’s soccer team who was an AHSAA Class 6A, Area 13 All-Area selection.

• Axel Gomez, a member of the JHS men’s soccer team who was an AHSAA Class 6A, Area 13 All-Area selection.

• Cesar Ponce, a member of the JHS men’s soccer team who was an AHSAA Class 6A, Area 13 All-Area selection.

• Martin Santana, a member of the JHS men’s soccer team who was an AHSAA Class 6A, Area 13 All-Area selection.

• Emersyn Haney, a member of the JHS softball team who was an AHSAA Class 6A, Area 13 All-Area selection and a Daily Mountain Eagle Eagle Elite First Team selection.

• Lexie Kilgore, a member of the JHS softball team who was an AHSAA Class 6A, Area 13 All-Area selection and a Daily Mountain Eagle Eagle Elite Second Team selection.

• Lilly Banks, a member of the JHS softball team who was a Daily Mountain Eagle Eagle Elite First Team selection.

• John David Kimbrell, a member of the JHS baseball team who was a Daily Mountain Eagle Eagle Elite First Team selection.

• John Walker Wilson, a member of the JHS baseball team who was a Daily Mountain Eagle Eagle Elite First Team selection.

• Laken Mullinax, Bryant O’Rear, Blake Frazier and Phillip Jackson, who represented Jasper High School at the 2026 Boys State.

• Lucy Fields, Layla Elmore and Elliott Jones, who represented Jasper High School at the 2026 Girls State.
Fields represented Jasper High School and Alabama at the 2026 Girls Nation held in Washington, D.C.

Not all students recognized during Monday's meeting were able to attend.

Orientations scheduled
for Jasper City Schools

Preparations are underway for students in Jasper City Schools to return to class, and with that comes orientations and registrations for the 2026-2027 school year.

Orientations will be held on the following days and times for each school:

JASPER HIGH SCHOOL
•Wednesday, July 29, at 1 p.m. in the JHS cafeteria for students in 10th, 11th and 12th grades
•Tuesday, Aug. 4, at 2 p.m. in the JHS cafeteria for students in 9th grade

JASPER JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL
•Tuesday, Aug. 4, at 10 a.m. for students in 8th grade in the JHS Theater
•Tuesday, Aug. 4, at 5 p.m. for students in 7th grade in the JHS Theater

MADDOX INTERMEDIATE SCHOOL
•Tuesday, Aug. 4, at 9 a.m. for students in 4th grade in the Maddox auditorium
•Tuesday, Aug. 4, at 1 p.m. for students in 5th and 6th grades in the Maddox auditorium

MEMORIAL PARK ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
•Tuesday, Aug. 4, at 12 p.m. for students in 2nd grade in the teacher classrooms

Orientation and registration for EL students in all grades will be held Thursday, July 30, from 8 a.m. until 3 p.m. in the Jasper High School cafeteria.

The first day of classes for students is Thursday, Aug. 6.

JHS AP Chemistry students
among brightest, scores show

Students at Jasper High School who took AP (Advanced Placement) Chemistry during the last school year fared better than most students across the nation, according to AP scores released earlier this month.

According to scores released July 6, Jasper High students taking AP Chemistry scored higher on average than students at both the state and national level.

Nicholas Sourvelis, who teaches AP Chemistry at Jasper High, said the credit for the high scores goes to a number of factors.

“The success we saw this year can’t be pinned to one particular thing,” he said. “It’s years of building this program. If you were to point our success to one particular thing, it would have to be all the support I receive in being able to teach this program.”

Sourvelis also teaches an Honors Chemistry course, and during that time he’s able to teach much of the AP Chemistry curriculum, “so when I get them in AP Chemistry we’re not necessarily starting at the beginning,” he said.

Sourvelis said Jasper High differs somewhat from most high schools in how AP Chemistry is taught. “Most schools teach it all year, from August until the first week of May,” he said, “but we don’t start the course until January.”

That allows Honors Chemistry students to roll right into taking AP Chemistry classes, he said, and avoid any long-term gaps between the two classes.

“It’s hard to point to any one thing (for the success of the program), other than years and years of me teaching it,” he said, “and me looking at the results and dialing in into what needs to be improved … as well as having the support from the school system to do it.”

Sourvelis, who has been teaching since 2011, began teaching AP Chemistry in 2015. He began teaching at Jasper High School in 2019.

“Without the support I get I just couldn’t do this,” he said. “We have good results every year, but this year was above and beyond.”

In the past, Sourvelis has taught three students in AP Chemistry who went on to attend medical school.

“All our kids who take this class work hard,” he said. “We always attribute it to intelligence, but in my experience being academically prepared and academically willing is way more important, in my opinion.”
