πŸ’™πŸ½οΈ Behind Every School Lunch Is a Team That Cares!

As National School Lunch Week continues, we’re recognizing the dedicated people who help make school meals possible every day across Jarrell ISD.

Long before students enter the cafeteria, there is important work happening behind the scenes. From planning menus and ordering ingredients to preparing food, maintaining safe serving temperatures, serving students, and cleaning up afterward, school nutrition involves much more than putting food on a tray.

Our Child Nutrition professionals balance nutrition standards, food safety requirements, busy serving schedules, and daily teamwork to help ensure students have access to nutritious meals in a welcoming environment. Their work helps support students throughout the school day and plays an important role in the daily life of our schools.

πŸ‘ To our Jarrell ISD Child Nutrition team: thank you for your hard work, dedication, and care. We appreciate all you do to serve students and support Cougar Nation!

πŸŽ“βœ¨ WHO WERE YOU? Principal Spotlight: Charlotte Mendoza βœ¨πŸŽ“

Before she was leading Jarrell Middle School, Mrs. Charlotte Mendoza was a straight-A student, teacher’s pet, quiet kid, dancer and total bookworm. πŸ“šπŸ’™

She grew up in Holland, Texas, and attended Holland ISD from kindergarten through 12th grade. She participated in UIL and dance, served as a class officer and was known for helping other students with math.

Her favorite subject? βž— Math.
Her least favorite? English.

One teacher who made a lasting impact was Ms. Diana Stroud, who took the time to help her work through difficult math problems when she didn’t understand.

And her favorite school lunch? πŸ• Pizza!

If you were looking for young Mrs. Mendoza at school, you would probably find her reading or tutoring someone in math.

She stayed out of trouble β€” unlike a few of our other principals πŸ˜‚ β€” and one of her favorite memories was going to prom with a group of friends.

Her favorite part? β€œNo drama.” πŸ˜„

And because it was the ’80s, we have to talk fashion:

Big teased hair.
Parachute pants.
Jelly shoes.
Letter jackets.
And ALL the scrunchies.

Her nickname was Charli, and her classmates probably would have voted her:

πŸ† Most Likely to Become a Math Teacher

They were pretty close!

She actually did dream of becoming a math teacher, but if someone had told her she would one day become a principal? She would have laughed and said, β€œNo way.”

The lesson she hopes JMS students remember is one she learned from her own school experience:

πŸ’™ β€œMake kids feel seen and heard. I was often overlooked because I was quiet and a good kid.”

And if she could talk to her younger self today? β€œYou are smarter and stronger than you think.”

That’s a pretty good reminder for every student walking the halls of JMS today. πŸ’™πŸΎ

🧼🌑️ Food Safety Matters Every Day!

There's a lot that happens behind the cafeteria serving line to help keep school meals safe!

School nutrition teams follow established food safety procedures throughout meal preparation and service.

These important practices include:

βœ… Proper handwashing and sanitation

βœ… Monitoring food temperatures

βœ… Safe food storage and handling

βœ… Cleaning and sanitizing equipment and preparation areas

βœ… Following procedures to reduce cross-contact with food allergens

These daily responsibilities are an essential part of school nutrition operations.

During National School Lunch Week, we're recognizing the attention to detail, training, and dedication required to prepare and serve meals safely.

πŸ’™ Thank you to the Jarrell ISD Child Nutrition professionals who make food safety a priority!

πŸ₯¦πŸŽπŸ₯› What's in a School Lunch? More Than You Might Think!

School lunches are designed with nutrition in mind!

Under the National School Lunch Program, schools plan meals around important food groups, including:

🍎 Fruits

πŸ₯¦ Vegetables

🌾 Whole grains

πŸ— Protein foods

πŸ₯› Milk

These components help provide a variety of nutrients that support growing bodies and developing minds.

School meals must also follow federal nutrition standards that address calories, sodium, and other important nutritional considerations.

During National School Lunch Week, we're celebrating the planning that goes into offering students balanced meals every school day!

πŸ’™ Fueling learning, one lunch at a time!
