Local youngsters spent Tuesday morning gaining a useful respect for the water by taking part in the School District of Janesville's Swimming and Safety summer school class at Joseph A. Craig High School!
Students channeled their inner dolphins and worked with instructors to learn how to manage swimming at their own respective levels. While small children got comfortable splashing and being pulled through the water, older students worked on traversing the Craig pool with asssistance ... or on their own using their favorite stroke method.
Learning to swim and be safe in the water is one of the greatest gifts a parent can provide for a child. Lessons build confidence, awareness and skills that last an entire lifetime.

Summer school is all about the fun, but building friendships sure is an awesome side product!
Tuesday at Monroe Elementary School, students had plenty of opportunity to interact through programs specifically for kindergarten and first grade, but also game-playing and art programs for older kids. In one classroom, students were busily making paper "candles" to affix to a "birthday cake" intended to celebrate the country's 250th birthday in July!
One of the great things about summer school is the laid-back atmosphere and the opportunity to work more closely with students in smaller classrooms. The attention certainly has an impact, as the kids are all smiles and truly seem to enjoy the opportunity to learn new things.
Kudos to the Monroe staff for working extra hard to make this happen!

THE NEED FOR SPEED!
This morning, students in the Boys Strength and Conditioning summer school program at Joseph A. Craig High School placed all of their attention on gaining agility and boosting speed during a workout in the Craig High fieldhouse!
The workout kicked off with drills intended to improve running form and get those quick-twitch muscles firing on all cyclinders. After that, it was over to the indoor track for a series of sprints to further push those balanced running skills.
No lifting today, but that, too, is a regular part of this program. It's great to see our students working because we know they see the value of physical fitness. That not only bodes well for their time on the fields, courts and tracks at Craig, but also for their years after high school!
