The School District of Janesville is proud to recognize Monroe Elementary School special education paraprofessional TANYA MORGAN as a Staff Member of the Year award recipient for the 2025-26 school year!

Now in her 14th year with the SDJ, Tanya joined the district after initially having studied radiologic technology after high school graduation. After she joined the district, she spent one year at Wilson Elementary, School District of Janesville before moving to Monroe for the next 13 years. In addition to her paraprofessional duties, she also serves as the school's crossing guard each day.

One of the people who nominated her for this award said, "What truly sets Tanya apart is her willingness to help all students, not just those with disabilities. She naturally steps in wherever support is needed, making a positive impact across the entire classroom. Tanya is not just a paraprofessional -- she is truly another teacher within the classroom."

Another nominator remarked, "Tanya is an invaluable asset who consistently exceeds the expectations of her role. A natural leader and collaborator, she is the first to step up when challenges arise, ensuring the team remains supported and effective. Her reliability is unmatched, but it is her dedication to student success that truly sets her apart."

Thank you, Kelly, for your outstanding contributions to our SDJ students, families and community. We are lucky to have someone as talented and dedicated as you on our team!

The learning commons held a candy corn guessing contest over the last two weeks. Each student and staff member submitted a guess, and today during the morning announcements, the winning guesses were revealed.
--The total number of candy corn was 637.
--The closest staff member was Mrs. Grauer (not pictured).
--Tied for second place with a guess of 650 were Gavin from 4th grade and Booker from 3rd grade. They each won a small bag of spooky treats.
--The winning guess was from Henry in 2nd grade, whose guess of 642 was only five off from the correct answer! In addition to some tasty treats, Henry went home with a candy corn plush.

Great estimating, everyone!

If the referendum doesn't pass, It's hard to imagine any building, including Monroe, not being affected by staff reductions. There is a detailed info banner in our lobby-please check it out when you come in for parent-teacher conferences.

What happens if the operational referendum is not approved?

Without a renewed operational referendum, the School District of Janesville would need to make significant budget reductions. Because approximately 70% of the district’s budget supports employee salaries and benefits, SDJ estimates that about 180 positions, or 10% of its total staff, would need to be eliminated for 2027-28.

Specific reductions have not been determined, but cuts could also affect:
➡️ Class sizes
➡️ Student support services
➡️ Course offerings and programming
➡️ Extracurricular opportunities
➡️ School and department budgets

If approved, the referendum would help maintain current staffing, programs, and services. Visit our website to learn more about the operational referendum: www.janesville.k12.wi.us/about-us/referendum

On Tuesday, the Janesville School District had a themed lunch to add a little extra fun to our menu. Here at Monroe, our students enjoyed some extra decorations that Ms. Dawn, Ms. Angie, and Ms. Shawna put up. Some circus music being played during lunch always gets everyone into the spirit of the festivities.
