Area students earn gold cups at Federation Music Festival Many local students earned awards at the 2022 Federation Music Festival held April 9 at Parker High School and hosted by the Janesville MacDowell Music Club.

Hours spent practicing the piano or another musical instrument may not always be fun, but new research shows that music lessons can benefit your brain for decades. A new study in the Journal of Neuroscience reveals that individuals who had even just a few years of music lessons as children had a faster brain response to the sound of speech than children who hadn't taken lessons. What's more, these effects were still strong even if the instrument hadn't been touched in decades. Scientists at Northwestern University tested the brain responses of 44 individuals between 55 and 76 to the sound of speech. The researchers found that those people who had 4-14 years of musical training--regardless of whether they still played their instrument--responded one millisecond faster than those with less training. One millisecond might not sound like much, but it's significant in terms of neural timing, and shows that musical training in childhood can pay off for the rest of a person's life.
