Must know tips for first-year college students: “It's going to be what you make of it. If you come and participate and talk and make connections, you'll walk away with things that will have stuck with you forever.”

Ginna Hensel, our Learning Commons assistant and 2021 graduate, says she was given many opportunities to get involved when she started college. She was a tutor, student ambassador, Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society member, and an elected student member of the college's board of trustees. She also participated in an internship with Disney World in Orlando.

"I came in and I just saw opportunity after opportunity after opportunity opening up in front of me," she said, "And every opportunity I took helped me make more connections, helped me learn more about myself, learn more about what I want, and learn more about the people around me."

Must know tips for first-year college students: “Don’t wait until your last semester to start thinking about and preparing for life after JCC.”

Julie Page, our director of Career Services, advises new students to visit their campus career services office early. It doesn't matter if they're undecided on what they want to study or what career path they may take after college.

"We can help you explore and learn about careers in more depth, get hands-on experience to help you confirm or modify your choices, and build important career skills you’ll need for the future," she said.

Must know tips for first-year college students: “Taking care of yourself is not a distraction from college success. It is the foundation of it.”

Shelly Wells, our coordinator or Health and Wellness Services, says the best thing a first-year student can do is treat their health like part of their academic success. That means getting 7-9 hours of sleep each night, staying hydrated, eating regular balanced meals, and moving their body every day.

Shelly also encourages new students to make time for stress management and social connection, and to use campus resources like health services, counseling, tutoring, and academic support when needed.

"Small healthy habits practiced consistently are far more effective than occasional big efforts," she said.

Must know tips for first-year college students: “Getting involved in clubs, student leadership, and attending events is a fun way to meet people with similar interests and find opportunities to apply their knowledge and talents in new and meaningful ways.”

Heather Gregory, our director of Campus Life and Programming, says new students have so many exciting opportunities available when they get to campus.

She added that getting involved not only helps students feel connected to their classmates and professors, it also gives them opportunities to gain experiences that can enhance their resumes.

"By the time they graduate, they’ve had the chance to add practical applications to the degree they’ve earned, all while making friends and memories," she said.

Must know tips for first-year college students: “One of the biggest things we want students to know is that asking for help is a college skill. If something isn't going well, reaching out early can make a difference."

Morgan Franchina, our Success Centers director, says school and personal challenges are generally easier to address when they are still manageable.

At , Morgan shared, students have access to many resources, including tutors, peer mentors, academic accessibility and accommodations, mental and physical health and wellness programs, personal and career guidance, and even financial assistance in some cases.

“You don’t have to figure out college on your own. Professors, counselors, academic advisors, and even your peers are always there for support,” she said.

What a fun two weeks of summer STEM Camp at our Jamestown Campus Science Center!

We welcomed students from across the region and Jamestown Public Schools for two week-long sessions packed with hands-on learning and plenty of thrills.

Students experimented with chemistry and food science, physics, manufacturing, biology, forensic science and more! They also ventured outside the Science Center to the Manufacturing Technology Institute, where they machined their own dog tags, and our Criminal Justice department, where they even locked President Daniel DeMarte behind bars!

We’re already looking forward to next year’s camp!
