On this day in 1932, Amelia Earhart flew a Lockheed Vega 5B plane 2,447.8 miles from Los Angeles to Newark, NJ, covering the distance in a 19 hours, 5 minutes, and becoming the first woman to fly solo coast to coast. Within a year, she would exceed her own record over that distance, completing the trip in 17 hours, 7 minutes.
