Southwestern Middle School is pleased to introduce its Students of the Month for September 2023. Congratulations to sixth-grader Zaira Gustafson, seventh-grader Ryen Hebner and eighth-grader Emily Weber. 👏👏👏

Sixth-grader Zaira Gustafson’s favorite subjects in school are science and math. She plays on the Southwestern volleyball team and belongs to the Southern Tier Football Club. When she is not at school, she likes to hang out with her friends and play volleyball and soccer. Zaira is the daughter of Amber Rizzo and Barry Gustafson.

Seventh-grader Ryen Hebner’s favorite subjects in school are math, English Language Arts, science, and social studies. He belongs to Southwestern Band and Choir and outside of school he is a part of NYSSMA and another band group. When Ryen is not at school, he enjoys reading books about mythology. Ryen is the son of Brandie Hebner.

Eighth-grader Emily Weber’s favorite subjects in school are social studies and art. Outside of school, she volunteers at Nola’s Angels and a horse rescue. She even sponsors one of the horses! When Emily is not in school, she enjoys going to Nola’s Angels and spending time with her cat. Emily is the daughter of Amanda Weber.

It’s National Hispanic Heritage Month (September 15-October 15, 2023) and sixth-graders at Southwestern Middle spent some time engaged in meaningful art lessons related to this observance. 🖼️ 🎨

Our Trojans worked on paintings inspired by Amate, a handmade paper-making process from Mexico. The paper is created from tree bark and pounded flat with stones. 📄🌳

Southwestern volleyball cruised past Dunkirk in three sets, 25-5, 25-11, 25-16, for a Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association Division 1 West victory on Tuesday.

𝗠𝗘𝗗𝗜𝗔 𝗙𝗢𝗥 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗠𝗔𝗦𝗦𝗘𝗦: The English Department of Southwestern Senior High took several classes to The State University of New York at Fredonia on Monday, October 2, 2023, to tour its Communications Department. 🚌

Our Trojans heard current and past newscasters, received tips from Emmy award-winning broadcasters, and toured student-run TV and radio stations. 📲🎥📺📻🎙 The college offered students lunch in a dining hall, where they took full advantage of the ice cream bar.🍦

Trojan Troops are shaping up at Southwestern Middle School! 🏫 During troop time this week, students discussed the positive aspects of teamwork and community. 🤝

Each troop followed clues that led to a secret location where they met up with other students and staff on the same team. Once all members arrived, students signed banners and were given a treat from SWMS’s Student Council. 🗺️🕵️‍♂️✍️

The four troops — Narwhals, Hedgehogs, Armadillos & Emus — are participating in fun and friendly competitions that increase middle school spirit throughout the year. ❤️💙

Southwestern Central School District’s annual Parent Information Night about Academic Intervention Services and Title 1 services will be held Thursday, Oct. 12, 2023, at 6:30 p.m. via Zoom. Parents of students in grades K-12 are cordially invited to attend!

A brief presentation about Title 1 and Academic Intervention Services will include how students qualify, the type of services they are eligible for, and how parents receive communication about their child’s progress. There will also be time for questions.

Members of Southwestern’s middle and high school band joined forces Saturday, September 23, 2023, to perform at the 200th-year celebration parade in Busti. 🥁🎺🪈🎼🎊

These students worked really hard and fit a month's worth of work into two weeks preparing for this event. 💪Great job to all the members who performed. 👏
