📚 It’s almost time to welcome our students back!

The first day of school for all Jamestown Public Schools students is Wednesday, Sept. 2. Thursday, Sept. 3, and Friday, Sept. 4, will be full days of school.

Schools will be closed Monday, Sept. 7, in observance of Labor Day.

We can’t wait to see our students on Sept. 2! 🎉

REMINDER: While the fall season is already underway for our football programs, official practices and tryouts for our other fall sports begin Monday, Aug. 24. All athletes must register on Arbiter at jpsny.org/athletics.

Jamestown Public Schools is mourning the loss of Lori Abel, a special education teacher at the RJF Tech Academy, who passed away Thursday evening following a courageous battle with cancer.

Abel joined Jamestown Public Schools in 2020 after spending more than 30 years serving students at GA Family Services. She received tenure from the district in 2024 and remained a valued member of the Tech Academy community.

“Lori was a dedicated advocate who cared deeply for her students and was unwavering in her commitment to helping them succeed,” said Superintendent Dr. Kevin Whitaker. “Her compassion and service made a meaningful difference in the lives of generations of young people both at the GA Home and with us at the Tech Academy. She will be deeply missed by her students, colleagues and our entire school community, and we extend our deepest condolences to her family and children, Justin and Katheryne.”

Funeral arrangements have been announced through Lind Funeral Home. Friends will be received from noon to 2 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 20. A memorial service will follow at 4 p.m. at the funeral home.

Jamestown High School’s new marching band director and music teacher, Ethan Thompson, is ready to build upon the program’s proud tradition while helping students grow as musicians, leaders, and teammates.

“Music has the unique ability to teach lessons that extend far beyond the classroom,” Thompson said. “If we can build great people first, great performances will naturally follow.”

A native of Wayne, New Jersey, and graduate of SUNY Fredonia, Thompson is now preparing the band for its 2026 field show, “Paint It Black” — a dramatic, western-inspired production featuring powerful music and visual storytelling.

Today, the Jamestown Public Schools family is mourning the loss of Anthony J. "Tony" Dolce. ❤️💚

For more than 35 years, Tony dedicated his life to our students as a history teacher, coach, class advisor, student organization advisor, mentor, and friend. A proud Jamestown High School graduate, he helped shape generations of Red & Green through his steady leadership, unwavering commitment, and care for students. Even after retiring in 2024, Tony remained a familiar and beloved presence at JHS as a substitute teacher.

"Few lived and bled Red and Green like Tony Dolce," said Superintendent Dr. Kevin Whitaker. "He dedicated his professional life to the students and families of Jamestown Public Schools as a beloved history teacher, coach, and advisor, shepherding many of our most cherished traditions with unmatched care and attention to detail. ... His institutional knowledge, calm demeanor, and sense of humor will be deeply missed."

Visitation will be held Friday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 5 to 7 p.m. at Lind Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday at SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, with burial to follow at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.
