Mastering Auxiliary Verbs in English: A Guide for Non-Native Speakers

Auxiliary verbs, also known as helping verbs, are essential in English because they help the main verb to form different tenses, voices, and moods. Understanding them will improve your speaking, writing, and comprehension skills.

There are four types of auxiliary verbs in English:

1️⃣ Verb “To Be” (am, is, are, was, were, will be, etc.)

Why do we use it?
✔ To form continuous tenses (ongoing actions)
✔ To form the passive voice
✔ To describe states or conditions

Examples:
✅ I am learning English. (Present Continuous)
✅ She was reading a book. (Past Continuous)
✅ The cake was made by my mother. (Passive Voice)

2️⃣ Verb “To Have” (have, has, had, will have, etc.)

Why do we use it?
✔ To form perfect tenses (actions connected to time)
✔ To show possession

Examples:
✅ I have studied English for two years. (Present Perfect)
✅ She had finished her homework before dinner. (Past Perfect)
✅ By next year, we will have learned many new words. (Future Perfect)

3️⃣ Verb “To Do” (do, does, did)

Why do we use it?
✔ To form questions and negatives
✔ To emphasize an action
✔ To avoid repetition

Examples:
✅ Do you speak English? (Question)
✅ He does not like coffee. (Negative sentence)
✅ She did call you yesterday! (Emphasis)

4️⃣ Modal Verbs (can, could, may, might, shall, should, will, would, must, etc.)

Why do we use them?
✔ To express ability, possibility, necessity, or permission

Examples:
✅ You must study every day. (Necessity)
✅ She can speak three languages. (Ability)
✅ May I come in? (Permission)

An informal conversation between two friends:

Sam: Hey, how's it going?

Tony: Not too bad, just trying to survive the workweek. You?

Sam: Same here, counting down the days till the weekend. Got any exciting plans?

Tony: Not really, probably just gonna chill at home. You?

Sam:?Yeah, thinking of hitting up that new burger joint on Saturday. You should join!

Tony: Sounds good; I'm always up for burgers. By the way, have you watched that new show on Netflix?

Sam: Oh yeah, I binged it last weekend. It's addictive! You should check it out.

Tony: Will do, thanks for the recommendation. So, any juicy gossip to share?

Sam: Ha, not much, but I heard Sarah and Mark might be a thing now.

Tony: Seriously? That's unexpected. Well, good for them, I guess.

Sam: Right? Life's full of surprises. Anyway, let's catch up soon over those burgers!

Tony: Absolutely, looking forward to it!
