We were honored to attend the Chelsea Heritage Celebrations Grant reception this week, which brought together the grant program's board, staff, and many inspiring grant recipients.

Wondermore is thrilled to receive a second year of support, helping us connect Chelsea Public School students with diverse authors and illustrators who spark a love of books and reading.

We're also grateful to the Chelsea Public Library for hosting the event and for the incredible work they do to engage and inspire Chelsea's children and teens through books, creativity, and cultural connection.

We're proud to be part of a community that believes in the power of the arts and stories to bring people together.

We closed out an extraordinary year this weekend with our end-of-year gathering. Board, staff, and loved ones came together to celebrate what Wondermore accomplished and to look ahead to what's next.

Long-time Wondermore collaborator Raúl the Third joined us and led everyone — toddlers to board members — through drawing activities that had the whole community laughing, creating, and connecting. It was the perfect reflection of what we do: put people in the room with authors & illustrators and watch something happen.

This year by the numbers:
📚 185 author & illustrator sessions
👩‍🎓 8,560 students participating
📖 9,740 books donated

Each of these numbers reflect students who are able to experience the joy of books, reading and writing. Students who see themselves reflected in the books and authors we bring to schools.

We have so much gratitude for the book creators, educators and students we partner with.

Raúl put it simply: "Thanks to Wondermore I have been introduced to thousands of students in the Boston community."

That's the work. Thank you to everyone who shows up for it.

During this , Wondermore board member Sarina attended sessions by author-illustrator Ruth Chan. Sarina’s takeaways, quoted below, embody our mission & values as an organization as well as the goals of our authors-in-schools program:

“I never had an author visit my school growing up, and certainly not one who looked like me. Last week I watched Ruth Chan with a room of first graders at the Mather School in Dorchester. She shared some of her early drawings, walked them through how she writes a book, and read THANK YOU, NEIGHBOR! ()

At one point [Ruth] drew a single squiggle and asked what it could be… The kids were jumping in…building on one another’s ideas. She made it feel easy, and doable!

As a kid, I didn’t think writing or illustrating a book was something I could try. I support Wondermore so more kids can see that they can, especially through people that look like them.”
