March 28th Coronavirus Update:

Still going! Currently all private guitar lessons are taking place via video chat (Zoom), to help prevent the spread of coronavirus and for the safety of student and teacher. Students do not need any special equipment, just a computer or tablet that has an onboard camera and microphone. All lesson material (handouts, written music, etc) can be shared via screen sharing just as we would put a piece of paper on the music stand in a lesson.

Group guitar lessons are paused - group guitar students are temporarily taking short private lessons until we return to our normal schedule.

There is limited availability for new guitar students to have a weekly private zoom lesson, but "a la carte" sessions are easy to schedule through a program called Calendly. See website for more information: www.JakeEstner.com

4 spots available in adult group guitar classes, but with a new class possibly being formed soon.

Happy to welcome aboard Skuli Thorsteinsson as an additional teacher for my guitar lessons studio in Jamaica Plain.

Skuli is currently assisting and teaching some of the children's group classes. Skuli is not only a versatile and highly skilled musician, but a terrific communicator with a thorough understanding of the challenges that come up when trying to keep kids motivated and enthused about guitar.

I've really been enjoying the use of Soundslice in my lessons and group classes. I can use Soundslice as a way to write music down for students and send them an interactive score without them having to download any other app or program. But the best part is that I can make the files sync up with the 'real' recording or youtube video so they can see the notation sync up with the real song while they play.

Student showcase: one my students, Tristan Geary, is heading off to Bard College to continue to study music. He is currently attending the Keep An Eye Summer Jazz Workshop in Amsterdam. Very proud of all his progress and accomplishments! Here he is improvising over the jazz standard "There Will Never Be Another You."

Not related to anything going on in my own lessons but wanted to provide a link to another amazing resource I’ve come across, Troy Grady’s “Cracking the Code”

I believe Grady has solved a lot of the mysteries of picking technique that have been stumping much of the guitar community since, well, the beginning of picking itself.

His material has already made a huge change in my own technique as well as given me very valuable new vocabulary and methods for helping my students.

If you’ve ever struggled with picking at all, I can't say enough good things about his discoveries and how he presents them in this series. His videos focus on rock/metal players but the mechanics apply to any genre.

The acclaimed Cracking the Code project melds archival footage, in-depth interviews, animations, and advanced video analysis to solve the puzzle of virtuoso guitar picking.
