Honoring the Child as the Blueprint for Justice:
What Can We Learn From The Reggio Emilia Approach?

More than just an educational approach, the Reggio Emilia philosophy is a heartfelt commitment to democratic values.

For us, teaching is a profound act of social justice. It is rooted in the belief that every child is a citizen with rights—a capable, complex, and powerful individual.

At the very core of this approach is the reverence we hold for our youngest citizens, a commitment to honoring the dignity and potential of every child. By creating a collaborative and respectful community for them today, we are cultivating the foundations for a more just and humane world tomorrow.

This is why the Reggio approach is so close to our hearts, and why we are so passionate about our work. Within every child, we see the power and promise to construct a brighter tomorrow. ❤️

Pairing loose parts materials with small world play offers numerous benefits for preschoolers. Loose parts, which are open-ended materials that can be moved, carried, combined, redesigned, and put together in various ways to encourage creativity and imagination. When integrated into small world play, children can use these materials to build unique landscapes, characters, and scenarios, fostering imaginative storytelling and role-playing.

Can we talk about early mark making and how amazing this is?! The consistent enthusiasm and interest in mark making observed year after year within our Barley classroom (4-5 years) is truly remarkable. Their engagement highlights the vital role of mark making in early literacy development, as children begin to connect symbols with meaning and cultivate essential fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination. Providing diverse and creative opportunities for mark-making supports the development of pre-writing skills, ultimately fostering the dynamic tripod grasp necessary for handwriting. We are continuously impressed by the children's dedication to this foundational learning process.

Materials are thoughtfully curated to provoke interest, organized for accessibility, and rotated throughout our classrooms to promote curiosity, wonder, and playful learning.

Stony Brook School will be closed on Tuesday, February 13th, but we hope you can get out and enjoy the snow with your little ones!

Freshly fallen snow makes a perfect canvas for snow painting! If you have any empty bottles of washable paint on hand, simply fill them up with water, give it a good shake and let the kids take them outdoors. Any spray or squeeze bottle will do, just fill with water, add a bit of washable paint, liquid watercolor, or food coloring for color. Don't forget to share your snow day pictures, we'd love to see them!
