BIG NEWS: Strategic Moves Chess Center’s First Open USCF Rated Event!

We are incredibly excited to host "Thankful for Chess," our very first US Chess Federation rated tournament! As a nonprofit organization, our mission is to bring high-quality chess events, classes, and camps to Onslow County and our surrounding communities.

Because we operate entirely on community support and the generosity of donors, entry to this tournament is 100% FREE!

Whether you are looking to test your skills in the Open section or compete in the U1300 section, we would love to have you join us for a fantastic day of competitive chess.

📅 When: Saturday, November 14, 2026
📍 Where: Kerr St Recreation Center (36 Kerr St, Jacksonville, NC 28540)
💰 Entry Fee: FREE! (Donations are greatly appreciated to help offset rental and non-cash prize costs).
🏆 Prizes: Non-cash chess prizes (sets, books, accessories) awarded based on your individual score! Plus, a special team bonus prize event.

Important Tournament Details:
• Format: 3-Round Swiss system
• Time Control: G/75; d5
• Sections: Open & Under 1300 (U1300)
• Schedule: Round 1 starts at 10:00 AM, Round 2 at 1:00 PM, and Round 3 at 4:00 PM (or ASAP).
• Requirement: Current US Chess Federation (USCF) membership is required to play.

2027–28 FAFSA Now Open

Onslow County Schools Seniors, the 2027–28 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is now open. Students planning to attend postsecondary education should complete the FAFSA as soon as possible to be considered for federal, state and institutional grants, scholarships, work-study opportunities and loans.

The results are in! As Onslow County Schools partners with Strategic Moves Chess Center to hold monthly tournaments in which students become nationally ranked, students from local middle schools and high schools gathered to compete in our first tournament of the year!
DeSoto Christian, Onslow Early College High School, Southwest Middle, Richlands High, and area homeschool students came ready to play!
We want to congratulate all of the students who competed today, representing their respective schools with pride! We look forward to these amazing events continuing each month this school year!

Today's middle school/high school tournament results are:

Onslow County Schools is partnering with Strategic Moves Chess Center to hold monthly chesstournaments in which students become nationally ranked!
Our first elementary tournament took place Saturday, September 19th. Students learned how to use chess clocks and record moves during the match. Elementary students representing Swansboro, Blue Creek, Summersill, Bell Fork, Stateside, Richlands, and Parkwood Elementary competed today.

We want to congratulate all of the students who competed today in 3 challenging rounds of chess! We are looking forward to an exciting year of tournaments!

After those 3 rounds, the results were as follows:
1st place: Adrian Brownlee (BCE)
2nd place (tie): William Berry (SBES) and Grace Luiz (STE)
