CongratulationsJoshua Nelson!!
Today we recognize a school counselor honored for his outstanding dedication to the all-around wellbeing of his students.
Joshua Nelson of Richard L. Brown Gifted and Talented Academy received the distinction of School Counselor of the Year from the Florida School Counselor Association (FSCA).
According to the FSCA – “The School Counselor of the Year Award honors the best of the best - counselors who are running a top-notch, comprehensive school counseling program at either the elementary, middle or high school level.”
Mr. Nelson believes the key components to understanding students is realizing that each student can learn and achieve – even if it is not the same way, or the same day as his or her peers.
Knowing that each student has a story….and that it’s vital to learn the story of the student…. Mr. Nelson says he focuses on social emotional learning.
He also builds relationships on all levels to create rapport.
This includes hosting lunch/brunch chats, playing catch, and learning every child’s name and at least one personal thing about them at the beginning of the year.
He also works to communicate the needs of students with teachers and administration…all in order to foster better advocation for student life and behavioral support.
In view of this honor, Nelson is receiving a superintendent’s coin of excellence from Dr. Greene.
He’s joined this evening by RL Brown Principal Kristi Kincaid.
Please join us in congratulating Joshua Nelson as the Florida School Counselor Association - Counselor of the Year!
