For the 15 years that I served as an NCAA Compliance Officer at NCAA Division I schools, I had students ask me why they had to sign a form that allowed the NCAA and the student-athletes' school and conference office the rights to use their Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) but they could not do the same. My answer was that if they did not sign the form, I could not certify them to compete.

Fast forward several years and there are high school and college student-athletes making millions of dollars a year using their NIL and social media accounts because of the July 2021 US Supreme Court unanimous ruling that the NCAA could not prohibit student-athletes from profiting off education-related payments.
