There are many avenues to every man; and when you cannot get at him through the great one, try the serpentine ones, and you will arrive at last. Lord Chesterfield

I am sure that you are aware of the old saying, “If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again.” This is essentially what Lord Chesterfield is saying here. There are many different ways to get your way. Almost every man has his weak points.

If you can’t defeat your enemy going in the front door, try the back door. If you find that the back door is also heavily fortified, try the basement window. There are many avenues to every man as Lord Chesterfield pointed out.

If one avenue doesn’t pan out, try another, then another, until you succeed. The word serpentine simply means winding or twisting. In other words, if the straight path to a man leads to a dead end, try the winding path. Think outside of the box when it comes to dealing with people.

I can pretty much guarantee you that the straight path has been well traveled and most men are aware of the ordinary approaches which people take to get to them. In order to be successful you may have to take the serpentine approach.

If success was simple and effortless, everyone would be successful, but it is not. You have to work for success. You have to use your mind. You have to go beyond the ordinary. Don’t give up at the first sign of resistance.

When you meet resistance, take it as a signal that you will have to work harder to accomplish your objective. It is the Universe testing you to see if you are willing to put in the work to earn your success in this endeavor. Don’t accept failure as an option.
