Homeschool Families in Jacksonville Illinois— Let's Build Something New!
We have all been saying... we need more homeschool programs in our area. So instead of just thinking, I’ve decided lets just do it!
This fall (September–December), I’m launching and hosting a project-based class in my home using the Gather Round: Inventions and Ideas unit. This curriculum is packed with fun and learning—covering science, history, business planning, creativity, and more. It’s designed to work across multiple grade levels, so depending on the interest, we may divide into age-based groups.

I’m also considering starting an Orton-Gillingham based reading class for students with learning differences—especially those struggling with reading. If that’s something your child could benefit from, let me know.

Tips for Parent-Teacher Meetings

It's that time of year again—parent-teacher meetings! Here are a few tips to help you make the most of these important discussions:

Show Up: We know you're busy, but your presence matters. Be there for your child.
The Teacher Is On Your Side: Most teachers genuinely care about your child and want to see them succeed. They often spend extra hours ensuring your student gets the best education possible.
Partnership Is Key: While the teacher plays a critical role, the responsibility for your child’s education ultimately rests with you. God has entrusted this child to you—it’s a joint effort between you and the teacher. They can't do it alone.
Communicate and Listen: Engage in meaningful dialogue with the teacher, but also be ready to listen. The child they see in the classroom may not be exactly the same as the one you see at home. Strong communication between you and the teacher will greatly benefit your student.
Ask How You Can Help: Find out what you can do at home to help your student thrive.
Clarify Jargon: Don’t hesitate to ask for clarification if the teacher uses unfamiliar terms. Just like mechanics or programmers, teachers can sometimes forget not everyone speaks their language. It’s okay to ask!
Know Your Rights: The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) outlines the services schools are legally required to provide if your student is struggling. Understand the IEP: If your child has an Individualized Education Program (IEP), pay attention to the goals set. Ensure the goals are challenging enough and that your child is receiving the necessary support to reach them. Sometimes goals are adjusted instead of providing the help your child needs.
Consider Outside Help: Educational therapy is highly recommended for students who aren’t performing at grade level. It teaches not just what to learn, but how to learn by strengthening cognitive skills.
Explore ADHD Coaching: Unstoppable offers ADHD coaching, which helps students learn to focus and develop strategies for effective learning.
Address Reading Difficulties: If your child is behind in reading, it’s essential to explore whether they might have a learning disorder. Students struggling with reading can benefit from specialized instruction, such as the Orton and Gingham method.
