I love being a first grade teacher and watching the kids grow during our 180 days together.

My favorite activity, at the start of the year, builds a community of learners that respects each individual and embraces the beauty in their differences.
I have the kids create first week portraits to hang in our classroom for the entire year and will later serve as the cover to our 1st grade portrait. We used the multicultural skin toned paper scraps to create a torn paper namebow, representing all in our class.

One of my favorite activities for the beginning of the year is creating a family tree. It’s helped me to understand my scholar’s family a little better. We are able to identify these various types of families with the image drawn. One home on the front and the other on the back. A sibling off at college can show they’re no longer living in the same house. A loss can also be shown above the family or on the backside, however the child wishes to share it. It allows us to normalize that one home doesn’t fit all.

Watching my little scholars take ownership, math accountable discussions, partnering in first grade… it’s a vibe and it gives me the feels.

My district adopted Benchmark Advanced. We are currently working in the foundation lessons. I love seeing what the kids produced in their center writing as we establish expectations for this workstation and learn how to listen with our ears and heart when sharing with each other.
