Join us Monday, September 14th for an event with our Kaleidoscope guest lecturer & Art Historian Dr. Zoe Weldon-Yochim. We will be in Merrill Hall's Howell Auditorium, 5:30-7pm.

This lecture is part of the Kaleidoscope Series of events celebrating the College of Arts, Humanities, and Sciences. As always, these events are free and open to the public!

More about the lecture:
"Contemporary artist Jack Malotte (Western Shoshone/Washoe, b. 1953) has long confronted the environmental and political consequences of nuclear weapons testing on Western Shoshone lands. Focusing on Malotte’s works on paper from the 1980s, this talk explores how the artist brought together images of plants, animals, and desert landscapes with fighter jets, mushroom clouds, and fences. Particular attention is given to The End (1983), a vivid drawing that challenges portrayals of the Nevada desert as barren or empty while making visible the lasting effects of nuclear testing and military occupation. The talk also situates Malotte’s art alongside the anti-nuclear activism in Nevada in which he participated."

As the Fall semester kicks off be sure to join us for the first exhibition of the semester! In the Practice of Seeing: National Juried Photography Exhibition will open August 27. The reception will be 5-7pm with awards announced during the reception. Receptions are always free and open to the public!

Join us this Friday June 26th from 4pm-7pm in the Manners Art Gallery for the opening reception of the Annual Calhoun County Community Art Show! There will be refreshments, nature themed art by community members, and some interactive activities in the Roundhouse Gallery. It is free and all are welcome! This event is come-and-go for the duration of the reception.

Edie will be showing our students how to harness the unpredictable with ink and illustration! Edie is a designer and illustrator!

Every year, after the Annual Juried Student Show, the President of the University picks pieces to hang in his home. The students are then invited to the President’s House to see their pieces and be honored for their accomplishment! Congratulations to the selected students this year!

Our department is honored to be at the GMA: Gadsden Museum of Art’s Art Trail On Broad! Our department head, Bryce Lafferty, will be doing student portfolio reviews so don’t hesitate to tell any fellow artists you know to take advantage of this opportunity. Before graduation, three of our student workers were nominated for JSU Student Worker of The Year Award! Getting nominated for this award is a huge honor so we congratulate Brianna Bailey, Katie Moon, and Ava Somers and thank them for all their hard work.
